I have just come back from the latest SG event, which was a bit of a challenge for me. My character had been promoted, and this means that I was being relied on as a player to make things happen.
This was totally fine and I was looking forward to it but there were some mechanisms within the game which hampered me in doing this, but I think I know what needs to be done over future events to help things get better not just for me, but the game as a whole.
You see when you have been playing a system from the beginning it can be tempting to show off and act as though you own the thing. However, no systems can thrive without new blood and I believe that if you are one of the old guard, who better to help the new players feel welcome and help them settle in? One of the players, who had a very longstanding character was excellent at standing back, and letting the less experienced characters have a go, and only step in to help when things were really tough. I want to play Dr McTavish in a similar fashion. I also believe that if your character takes on a senior role, you as a player have to put some work in to make it work. You can't just leave it to the event alone.
So here is the McTavish/Debs list of things that may be useful to do.
1) Have a complete list of character's skills so items found at events can be investigated by characters quickly, and research passed around so as many players are engaged as possible. At a few points in the events I was asked to get one of 'my people' to investigate something, and I had no idea who they were. Plus, we had someone with nothing to do and I had no idea about it but had to get them something in a rush, but would like to have known about it earlier.
2) Have her at the front at the IC initial briefing. There I can introduce myselfso new players know me by sight, and what I am about. I can introduce myself personally and if I don't already know what they do, find out IC and write it down so the ice is broken and the player knows that someone is interested in them, and what they can do.
3) See about a Deputy or Assistant Head of R&D. This is someone who works with me and if one of us is on a mission, there is always someone at base who players can update and ask questions of. We then update the other when they are back from that mission. There is the chance we end up on the same mission, but I suspect that will be rare.
4) There is a Head of Research and Development for Scientific and Engineering project, and a Head of R&D for Medical Projects, who looks after the Academics then? What about the linguists, historians, archeologists etc? Do they have a Head to turn to? That needs sorting out ASAP. I think this either needs to be brought under McTavish's umbrella or see if a role can be created for A Head of R&D, Academic Projects.
5) Try and track down all those little bits of flavour that other characters have created in the past, so I have an idea of the facilities available for other characters to use, and it add flavour to the boards as well, especially for the newer players.
6) Help in the WIKI so alot of information useful for the future is lost again. I would be very useful not only for myself but future players of R&D.
It will take time, and missing the Summer event will not help either but I believe my efforts will be supported.
