Evil Dead

Yesterday's very firm plans to go home and watch movies and not get out of bed until this morning were interrupted by a friend calling to see if I wanted to go with him to see Evil Dead: The Musical.  Since it's only here another two weeks and I'd been meaning to see it for months (and the fact that my dvd player's broken, yet again), I dragged my butt out the door to meet him. Upon arrival at the theatre, I was informed that he had secured seats in the much-coveted splatter zone, meaning you get splashed with blood.  Given the lack of warning, and my not dressing for that eventuality (silly me, imagine not planning to end a theatre trip dripping in blood) I was slightly cross with him, but it did seem like quite the experience so I went with it,.

The show was very funny, although I know I missed some of the references because I've never seen the films, everyone else was laughing at bits that I wasn't sure about. But then they managed to work the phrase "fashizzle my wizzle" into a song and no one else understood why *I* was laughing so hard (thank you ainsleyaisling and fizzygrapedrink for the image that subsequently popped into my head) so it was fair.  The performers were all quite good, the songs were hilarious. I especially liked "All The Men In My Life Keep Getting Killed By Kandarian Demons" sung to a 60's rhythm (think It's My Party and I'll Cry If I  Want To).  And demons doing choreography was brilliant; there were jazz hands.  The sets were done by the guy who did Lippa's Wild Party, though much less elaborate I could see some interesting touches. And at intermission they had to come wash the blood off the stage and used window-squeegies and a wet-vac to make it safe.  I'm amused by these details.

They handed out little plastic ponchos at intermission so we wouldn't get totally drenched in blood, but a large group of teens in the front eshewed the service, pulled on their brand-new white Evil Dead: The Musical tshirts and spent the show trying to get as gory as possible. I hope they took the subway home like that!  I got rained on slightly, but the poncho protected me so I didn't have to kill my friend, who's poncho had a tear and he got a bit splattery.  He didnt' care, just bouight a new shirt on the way out.

Overall, it wa a fun show, not utterly unmissible, but a good evening out. If it comes to anyone's city, you should go see it, especially if you enjoy the films.  But it was totally understandable if you've not seen them (plot being not much of an issue). If you don't like blood, don't go. It does get a bit gross.  And don't wear white if you sit in the front!  Red is good.

The only problem with going out last night was I missed the Canadian television premier of Blood Ties, which I've already seen, but still.  I will watch the rest though. Monday nights at 8.
