I went with
sarahb273 back to our old school to see a play that was being put on by some visiting students from Syracuse University's London campus. Those of you how know anything about where I live then you will know why this was an important thing.
The story focuses on the character of Chelsea Shapiro who has returned home from New York following the death of her mother to help her father with her younger brother, Colin. After receiving a visit from an old school friend, Susan, Chelsea feels eve more stuck in a rut. That's until she gets a package in the mail bearing the name of her late mother.
It turns out it's been mistakenly sent to her as inside is the journal of a young woman who had the same name as her mother, Alice Shapiro.
Alice was an American student travelling through Europe while studying in London. She was on board Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21 1988.
The play takes you through Alice's journey in the last few months of her life and also what was happening in the present day to Chelsea that meant she could relate to this other Alice.
I'm not really a big fan of plays but this one was something different. It was funny, witty, poignant and overall well written.
The actors were the same, especially those who played Chelsea and Colin. The actress playing Alice would have been there too but she forgot one of her lines halfway through.
At the end of the performance, candles were lit in memory of the 35 Syracuse students who lost their lives that night.
Almost 20 years has passed since then but this play shows that it's still very much an open wound for some people, especially with the bomber's appeal due to be heard next year.
