Just a bit disappointed, yeah...I haven't really mentioned this before, because in my family there's an unspoken tradition that you don't speak about good things before they happen, in case you jinx them.
A year ago, I contacted the head of the "Trident Team" (basically, the cyber-security threat response team) at the bank I work at, asking about a possible move to his team. Now, he and I have worked together on a few audits, and he knows my background, so when he said he'd be "*very* interested" (emphasis his) in speaking to me, I thought that was a good sign.
We had a talk, and he indicated he was in the midst of convincing his management to create a position in Canada (he sits in New Jersey, as part of our US operations) that would basically be his "right hand man". He thought I'd be a great fit for the job - not only do I have the technical background, but I can also do the "management-speak" thing, thanks to years in audit. I left that meeting feeling pretty damn good. Furthermore, he suggested I meet with his AVP as well, which I did - another meeting that went very well, I thought.
Months go by. I check in with him periodically, because I can't officially move to that team until there's a job posting. He tells me the role is actually being strengthened, and sounds more intriguing to me, although it also becomes a two-pay-band jump, which is a bit worrying. Finally, in August, they post the job, and I apply. And I don't hear anything. Other somewhat-interesting jobs get posted internally at the same time, but I don't apply, as I'm putting all my chips on this one, so to speak.
In September, I get hold of my contact again, and he tells me they didn't get enough applicants, so they're re-posting. Fair enough, I guess, although I wasn't aware there was a minimum number of applicants required.
Then I hear that they're also posting the job externally - and this worries me, because instead of competing with the 80-odd thousand other bank employees, most of whom couldn't spell security, I'm now competing with security experts world-wide, some of whom admittedly look better than I do, at least on paper.
End of October, I send a query through the appropriate channels, saying (in essence) "WTF?", and get a response back that they haven't made a decision yet. At the same time, my original contact becomes VERY busy (legitimately, as I know the background there), so he's not available for me to talk to. For the next two months.
Fast forward to yesterday. My contact is FINALLY available to talk to me. And by this point, you've probably already guessed what happened - they extended an offer to someone "overseas" last Friday. Apparently, if this unknown person turns down the job offer, I'm still in the top two, but that doesn't make this any easier for me.
So, yeah, profound disappointment today. I'll get over it in a few days or weeks, but in the interim I'm just a bit bitter about the whole thing. Anybody have a job for an IT Security expert?
