Is Wal-Mart poised to
save local agriculture, leading locavores to the promised land, revitalizing "heritage" species of produce, and bring healthier eating to the masses? It is, at first glance, an odd idea, but Wal-Mart is ultimately about bringing people what they want, and doing it cheaper. While it might be cheaper to buy produce in California or Mexico, the transportation costs add significantly to the price.
Wal-Mart destroys small-town retailers - this is pretty much a given. But it could be that they can save the small local farms. I know that if my local Wal-Mart ever started carrying grass-fed beef (are you listening, guys?) I'd be a much happier camper.
