The year that was .....

Dec 31, 2006 01:58

Open to the public, unlike most of my posts these days.

I feel better, after another 5 hours of sleep. I hope this shit is gone tomorrow, I really dont want to be ill on my second favorite day of the year.

Overall it was a fairly shitty year. Totally forgetable on the good side of things (ie no "I'll remember this in a good way events") and had its fair share of WTF moments. Overall life was bland in 06 with bumps in all the wrong ways/places.

My media/entertainment choices for the year:

New:
1. Heroes. It came out of nowhere. I had watched a torrent months before the premier and I still didnt expect it to be good, or popular.
2. Jericho. Not mainstream. Scifi-ish show that has a twinge of twilight zone style "whats really happening here". Great cast, good plots. Sadly missing a bit in the political aspect given the nature, but thats going to happen sooner or later.
3. Friday Night Lights. Yes its football. Yes its teen angst. Yes its this good.
4. Battlestar galactica. Yes it has fallen off a bit. Still one of the best of all time.
5. Rome. Just good TV. Probably the most overlooked show of the year.
6. Deadwood. Its not as good as it once was, mired in some serious "will it or wont it" happen crap for most of the season. Still good overall.
7. Lost. Jumped the shark.
8. Dr Who. The only light hearted show I watch. Absurd at times.

1. Democrats sweeping the elections. I'm not a liberal. It was however abso-fucking-lutely awesome to see the christian right get its teeth kicked in.
2. Banning trans-fats. No it wasnt this event in and of itself. What needs to happen is the culture needs to change. Americans eat crap. Companies use shit to make food cheap and taste decent. The fats, oils and sugars need to be reduced or replaced. Otherwise in 20 years kids wont need strollers, they'll need forklifts.
3. BMW releases a hydrogen car. You cant afford it, and neither can I, however its the first step towards getting away from blood-oil. It helps with a myriad of socio-economic issues and climate related problems that come with using fossil fuels.
4. Rumsfeld steps down. Gates is a much better man for the job. Regardless of party.

Honorable mention: Wii-mote. How much of a change is it ? Kids playing video games has always built skills in things like reaction time, coordination, imagination and troubleshooting. Now it also keeps them from being lard-ass couch potatoes.

** I am not mentioning the middle east. Its a fucking problem, been going on for thousands of years, going to keep going on for thousands more.

Well honestly .... yeah. I couldnt list many albums that came out this year. Instead I'll list some albums that I bought/discovered this year, along with this years stuff.
1. System of a down. Mezmerize
2. All that remains. The fall of ideals
3. Tool. 10,000 days
4. Deftones. Saturday night wrist.
5. QOTSA. Lullaby's to paralyze.

Generally a pretty shitty year. NIN concert was by far and away my personal highlight. It wasnt the best I have ever seen, but it was damned close. Hopefully with new NIN and Smashing Pumpkins albums on the way 07 will be better.

1. Clerks 2.
2. Casino Royale.
3. V for Vendetta.
4. Mission Impossible 3.
5. Inside Man.
6. The Illusionist.
7. Hostel.
8. Grandma's boy.
9. Night Watch.
10. Brick.
11. Cars.
12. Pirates of the caribbean: dead mans chest.
13. The Prestige.

*** I have heard great things about but have not yet seen:
The Departed.
The fountain.
Bobby.
The Good Sheppard.
Children of Men.
and although I have heard nothing about it, the visuals and concept look/sound amazing:
Pan's Labyrinth.

Again, not all new:
1. House of Leaves.
2. Anansi Boys.
3. Foundation and Empire.
