I had a pure-breed(sp) pit bull named Red as a kid. The dog was from SPCA and had some major behavioral problems which my parents were aware of but thought they could correct with training and love. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case and the dog turned out to be a bit pyscho and very unsafe for my brother and I to be around as well as neighbors. It didn't help that most people in the neighborhood had pre-conceived ideas(understandably so) about the breed and the fact that Red was very agressive and did not follow direction only complicated matters. Eventually...the dog had to go to a new home because he was so crazy with us kids and the neighbors were raising hell about how unsafe they thought he was. My dad found someone who had a lot of acreage and could provide the dog with a large amount of space to run free without being around kids or people.

I bought this dvd set of a show called Dog Whisperer(amazing) and one of the episodes featured a family with a pit bull. The breed needs A LOT of activity and a ton of exercise to make them more passive for trainging(that's how I understood it) otherwise, without the physical outlet they have a much higher tendency to be agressive and not follow their master's direction.

Keep us posted on what you decide....and good luck!!!!
