Words spoken by a chaplain a few hours ago. I doubt he meant it like this, but it serves a great soap box to step on.
Are we worshipping Jesus, the person, or Christianity, the ideas found in the Bible? I know everyone will answer Jesus. When does the murderer say "yeah, I slit her throat."
Of course I don't think it as concrete and formal. Never would, I hope, someone knowingly say "Its not a matter of worshipping him, just as long as the idea is there." Except for a few philosophers, I've never actually heard this. But is it not a good thing to make sure we are not doing? I think I was. It makes for easier religion if your master works according to a set a rules, like a mechanical dog. When the idea, however, becomes a person we have to throw emotions into the mix, personal choice, and a whole slew of other things.
Now, if I referred to, say, my love like this I think she would be upset. "Baby, you're such a great concept," would probaly get me slapped.
