Under the Skin by Michel Faber
I can't quite work out what I think of this book yet. It's the story of Isserley, who picks up hitchers for a reason unknown at first. She seems to want them for something, and particularly picks them up for their seeming strength. I'm unsure that it deserves its moniker of 'Science-fiction', I could see that as the story developed, there were elements, but still.
I felt a little lost by the end of the book. I can't really put my finger on it, but I always feel a little cheated by this kind of ending, it irritates me nearly as much as 'they all woke up and it was a dream'. Which I was guilty of using once in my childhood before I realised what a cop-out it was!
Anyway, not on a par with The Crimson Petal and the White, which was also written by him, but nonetheless an interesting tale.
