Kassie and I are back from our trip to Germany. We went on an exploratory trip to see if we want to live there next year. My company announced a couple months ago that engineering and manufacturing are moving to Germany. The biggest reason being that most of Siemens Medical is located there, so we can take advantage of the economies of scale, etc. I've been offered a job at the new company there. Erlangen, Germany. Between Frankfurt and Munich, close to Nuremberg. Obviously with a wedding coming up next year as well, we wouldn't want to move until after we get married. So if we decide to go, it will be around June, 2007. Most likely a 3 year thing.
We went into the trip thinking we wouldn't like to live in Erlangen - 100,000 people, of whom 20,000 work for Siemens. Not exactly what we're used to in SF. We were thinking we'd live in Nuremberg. A bigger city, more to do, and such. But as it turns out, we really liked Erlangen - especially the old city, near Theaterplatz. Really cute, cobblestone streets, and more shops, restaurants, cafes than we anticipated. A cool Thai place, a hip sushi place, tapas, Italian, and of course plenty of German food. We even found a wine bar. Plus it would only be a 10 minute walk or so to work. A big plus for me, who has been dealing with an hour and a half commute for almost 4 years. Life would be very different there, not just with the new culture, language, and all, but also from a quality of life standpoint. More time, more vacation (6 weeks!!), and access to the rest of Europe. We're pretty excited about the opportunities. More on this later. Gotta run to a meeting.
