You ever realize sometimes that other people in your life are totally predictable, almost to the point of stereotypes? This morning completely encapsulated the personalities of two of my roommates, Adam and Dan. Adam is your classical nebbish Woody Allen-type guy, afraid of asserting himself or taking charge of a situation. He's a follower. Dan, on the other hand, is loud and I'm sure he fashions himself a born leader. Unfortunately he's also totally unreliable. Take, for example, this morning:
The three of us all have tickets for ESPN College Gameday at the Comcast Center. Adam's entry time is around 9 am while Dan and my entry times are after 10. Adam pesters me all during the previous evening about when he should get there, where he should get seats, whether he should try for front row or in the back, can he park in Lot 1, etc., etc. I've gotten tired of this act over the course of the basketball season so I feign ignorance and answer every question with 'I dunno' or some variant thereof. I don't coordinate any particular time to leave as I figure Dan and I will talk in the morning and then we'll call Adam.
Since my entry time is, as I mentioned, 10 am and I know I'll have a seat saved for me I set my alarm for 9:45 am, and end up hitting the snooze button until 10 am. Of course at that point in the morning Adam has already called me twice and sent me a text message from Comcast. I ignore them. I turn on my monitor to check my email and see that Dan sent me an IM at 5 am saying that he had just gotten in for the night, was parked behind me, and left his keys on the table for me to move his car. Very sweet of him, and of course no surprise whatsoever. I'm used to having to move his car around so I can go places, I had to do it all the time last winter and this summer when I worked at CSPAC. It was sadly also no surprise when I go upstairs and see that, in fact, Dan has not left his keys on the table or anywhere I have access (He told me a little while ago that after IMing me he promptly put his keys on his desk and hopped in bed). Makes it very helpful when I need to drive to Comcast because I also have to drive to work immediately afterwards since I'm the supervisor for our matinee show. Glorious.
It all worked out in the end. I found Adam in Comcast and Dan is giving me a ride home (in a couple minutes) but it still annoys me that I have to put up with that sort of crap. At this point I've learned my lesson that both are very unreliable, in different ways. I hate having to be the reliable one.
