zeispunim and I spent 3½ hours at a huge used books sale today, and we had very big grins on our faces as we carried our heavy boxes to the car. I bought a bunch of books.
She bought more, but I don’t envy her. Wanna see why? Of course you do!
I am now the proud owner of:
Language
The Elements of Style by Strunk and White
Wordsmanship: Preposterously long, cruelly obscure substitutes for common everyday words by Claurene duGran
The Pocket Dictionary of Signing by Rod R. Butterworth and Mickey Flodin
The Elements of Editing by Arthur Plotnik
Religion
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
Girl Meets God: On the Path to a Religious Life by Lauren F. Winner
Women of Spirit: Female leadership in the Jewish and Christian Traditions by Rosemary Ruether and Eleanor McLaughlin
Protestantism in America by Jerald C. Brauer
Fiction
Roots by Alex Haley
In the Beginning by Chaim Potok
The Iliad translated by Robert Fitzgerald (and written by, obviously, Homer)
The Odyssey translated by Robert Fitzgerald
The Incredible Bulk (these could go under Language and Religion, but they are cool enough to deserve a separate section)
Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible (HAHAHAHAHA how awesome am I???!!!!)
Webster’s Third New International Dictionary (if only you had heard my giggles when I discovered this gem. It's 2662 pages!!!)
I tried not to comment on these purchases, but as you can see, it didn’t last for the big books. I really, really like big reference books.
And even if the Strong’s Concordance doesn’t make you green with envy, this should: I bought all of the above for a total of $13.75.
It still makes me giggle.
