Okay, first off, I believe it's you who owe *me* happy Skate. *cough* Mickey Mouse ringing any bells? ;)
Kidding...
And in a more literal, less symbolic reading, this has the perfect ammount of ambiguity regarding her death, what happened to her (we are only told once, barely, that she's under the ground, but we don't have direct references and that makes this so so so amazing in my opinion).
Oh, I'm so glad you said this. I was actually going to ask you about this but forgot when I sent you the last bit...Part of me worried that it was *too* ambiguous. I considered having direct references, but didn't want it to be *too* obvious (plus, I didn't want to have to go into detail as to what exactly happened - not the point of this fic).
I can't tell you how sad it makes me, and happy at the same time, because Sawyer's love is all in those four lines. Perfect.
I've been watching and re-watching all my Kate/Sawyer clips for this, and one thing that's struck me that I didn't particularly notice the first time I saw the episodes is how obvious Sawyer's love for Kate is. He totally wears his heart on his sleeve where she's concerned. So I'm glad that came through here, too.
I love that she calls him James at the end. I don't know why, but it seems to mean so much, you know?
Again, something that came from re-watching clips. She says the same line ("Thanks, James") when he gives her the mix tape. She only seems to call him James either when she's pissed at him, or when she's being very sincere. I do love that.
And another detail that I loved is that Sam is actually apologizing to Sawyer for failing Kate
You're the best, you know that? Because that's the other line I worried about. I knew I wanted to have them both say they failed her, but I didn't know how that would come up in conversation...An apology seemed to be the best bet, and well, we all know it wasn't coming from Sawyer, not in so many words at least. I'm glad it worked.
And of course, your characterization of Sam is perfect
I have you to thank for that, you and your "goodness and discipline and hardcore." So thanks!
And it's definitely been a pleasure for me, too - thanks so so so much for making this fun to write, instead of just agonizing. (And dude, you do *not* want to know what plot bunny has popped into my head after this one...Aah!)

Yeah, I saw your post about spoilers, but as you know, I'm spoiler free...But argh, your post so made me want to read spoilers! I'll be strong...I must be...
Aw, you're too sweet, really. I'll let you know if I do decide to write the Kate POV :)

Ack. I kind of got the impression they were major spoilers from your post. And I REALLY want to know your reaction to them - but DON'T tell me. I've caved on spoilers before (for ER) and it's just ruined the experience for me, completely. I am, however, COMPLETELY impatient for s4 to begin!

I was thinking about kind of making it into a series...I actually didn't even set out writing That Was Real to be such a companion piece to Elegy, but it kind of turned out that way. Several people have made note of that to me.
I do appreciate that - because it's SO hard for me to not just ask you to tell me everything! Hah.

I'm actually kind of looking forward to writing Kate's POV in the flashbacks, so I'm sure it'll happen eventually!
