taking a break

Aug 30, 2008 23:07

Just a little heads-up that I'm going to be taking a break from this journal for a while, both writing and reading. Real life is kicking my ass these days, and I need to step back from most things online fandom-related for now and put all my focus into real life so it doesn't kick my ass even further. I'll miss this little corner of the internet, and all you wonderful people in the Lost fandom - this is truly a fandom unlike any other. *group hug*

I'll be back, just not sure when. (Those of you who know my personal journal, I'll still be around there, when I can.) And I might pop in here from time to time, too. We'll see how it goes. I *will* continue checking and responding to email, which does include comments from either journal.

Everyone, enjoy the fall premieres that are coming up! I'm personally really excited about Bones and The Office.

I leave you with a couple memes that have been floating around the friends list and have been sitting on my computer for a while now:

Do NOT look at the questions before picking the fandoms!
1. Lost
2. Bones
3. The Office (US)
4. Big Love
5. M*A*S*H
6. ER

01. Who is your favorite character from #6? [ER]
Abby. There's just no question about it. She was my first television girlcrush and she's remained a great character despite the writers' many, many attempts to assassinate her character along with the rest of the show. Plus, I "was" Abby for so long (via RPing) that she's just kind of ingrained with me now. Maura Tierney just rocks the socks right off of every single performance where she's Abby. Gah, I love Abby. I miss Abby. Sigh.

02. Who is your least favorite character from #4? [Big Love]
Bill Paxton's ass. Bill. God, what an idiot and a horrible excuse for a man, husband, and father. (I almost said Rhonda, because wow, is she annoying, but Bill. We're going with Bill.)

03. What would a crossover between #1 and #5 include? [Lost/M*A*S*H]
Oh, dear. Hawkeye would teach Jack something about bedside manner and how to make women love him and how to deal with shitty situations without crying so much. Except I kind of think that can't be taught. Um, Hawkeye would insist on peace talks with The Others and would charm the pants off of Jacob/Ben/Widmore/The Island and they'd all live happily ever after. And there would have to be some great scenes between Hawkeye and Sawyer. There'd be some kickass poker games. It'd also be extremely amusing to put Col. Flagg and Mikhail in a room together. Locke would be jealous of Radar's super sonic hearing ESP. And young!Alan Alda would get to be shirtless much more often, which makes the world such a better place.

04. Who is your favorite ship from #1? [Lost]
Sawyer/Kate. As if there's even any question about that.

05. If you were to set one person from #3 and one person from #6 on a blind date, who would they be? [The Office and ER]
Oooh. Kelly and Legless Ray. They could be shrilly annoying together! And jog off into the sunset together, or whatever. (I feel this meme could be much more interesting if I weren't feeling so snarky towards all things television lately.) Okay, serious answer...Angela and Luka - they could be hypocritically self-righteous together. Oops, snarky again. I'd want to set up my two favorites - Jim and Abby, but I fear Abby might corrupt poor innocent Jim, and besides, the nearly-20-year age difference might make that a bit creepy.

06. If you could meet one person from #4 and spend the day with them, who would it be, and what would you do? [Big Love]
Lois! Lois would be hilarious to spend a day with. We could go wave shotguns at people we hate, and other family-friendly activities. Or Barb; I'd love to just hang out with Barb. Go shopping and out for coffee and rant about the men in our lives.

07. If you could change one thing about #2's plotline, what would you change? [Bones]
Oh, gee. How about THE ENTIRE SEASON FINALE?! Zack would NOT be Gormagon's apprentice (of course) and the whole Booth-was-dead-for-two-weeks-except-he-wasn't thing would have been actually dealt with. Damn you, Hart Hanson!

08. Explain a relationship between two people (not necessarily romantic) from fandom #5, and why you like the relationship between them. [M*A*S*H]
Hawkeye and Trapper. No, I'm not a 'shipper (M*A*S*H is like Lost in the rabid 'shipping of slash) - I just love all their interactions and how they play off of each other. While I think, eventually, Hawkeye and BJ had the stronger, deeper, probably lasting post-war friendship, I always enjoyed watching H/T onscreen more. They just have that thing that makes you sit up and watch, only for them.

09.If the lead characters from #1 and #3 were both drowning, and you could only save one, who would it be? [Lost/The Office]
Jack and Michael? Oh, of course I'd save Michael Scott. No question about it. Sorry, Jackass; I've never liked you.

10. If you were able to add a new character, any kind of character you wanted, to the storyline for #6, what would the character be like and what would their role be? [ER]
No one! They've added and subtracted way too many characters over the years! It's dizzying, really. Maybe a man for Abby who won't, let's see...leave her when she's 7, take advantage of her when she's drunk, cheat on her, leave her for the continent of Africa, try to be her savior, kidnap her, hold a gun to her head, stalk her, leave her and their son for six months at a time (God, it sucks to be her)...Yes. Let's add a NORMAL guy (or girl) for Abby, plz. Who just plain loves her for her obvious kickass awesomeness.

11. What happens in your favorite episode of show #2? [Bones]
I was just talking about this with someone the other day. 2x09 Aliens in a Spaceship. Best. Episode. Ever. Hodgins and Brennan get kidnapped and buried alive in Brennan's car. (I know, I know, sounds stupid - work with me here.) The whole episode is them trying to figure out where they are and somehow communicate that back to the squints and Booth in the lab. But there's this one scene that just makes the entire episode; they know they're going to die, and Hodgins turns to Brennan and says "Dr. Brennan, it's been a pleasure," and sticks out his hand. And she breaks character and pulls him in for a hug, and god, I'm getting weepy just thinking about it. And then there's other parts too; Hodgins telling Brennan that he's crazy in love with Angela, Booth running faster than ever when he sees them, Angela taking Hodgins home because he's afraid to go to sleep. And the end scene is awesome, too - Bren goes with Booth to church and somehow they stay exactly the same, Bren the staunch athiest and Booth the devout Catholic, but it's okay and for once they're not arguing about it and they're just sitting there quietly, fade to black. Beautiful episode. In fact, I think I need to pause in my BSG watching to watch that one. It's been a while.

12. If you could kill off one of the characters of #1, who would it be and how would you do it? [Lost]
I almost said Jack. But really, it'd have to be Diane Janssen. Because it was a cheap trick to bring her basically back from the dead in Eggtown. Sam should have been there. I'm still bitter about that.

13. If you got the chance to visit the set for either show #3 or show #5, which would you choose? [The Office or M*A*S*H]
Oh, wow. This is a hard one, because those are the two sets I'd most like to visit out of all of these fandoms. I'm going to have to go with M*A*S*H, though (back when it was still in production, that is).

14. So, I saved the best question for last. If you could date anyone from any of these fandoms, which fandom and which person?
Jim Halpert - The Office. This is so not the best question, because it's such a ridiculously easy one. Jim all the way. No question about it. (If the question was who would you sleep with, rather than date, it would be much, much harder to answer.)

And one more:

Post the first line from your 25 most recent fanfics and try to find a pattern.

1. There are no coincidences.
2. It's an angry, soaking rain in the middle of the night, when they're woken by the island shaking from its very core.
3. They are two people who knew each other, once.
4. Disappointed.
5. You bring him daffodils.
6. Your families are already there, they've been promised, and Kate holds Aaron close to her chest.
7. At first, it doesn't work.
8. When he comes back (he won't tell her how; none of them will), she offers him a place to stay because her house is certainly big enough - too big - and she remembers how it'd felt, coming back to nothing.
9. When the sky over Los Angeles turns purple, Aaron screams, a high-pitched wail that chills Kate to her very bones.
10. "Jack could do it."
11. Try as he might, there are some faces Sayid will never forget.
12. There is a motel room.
13. At first glance, it's a typical early-fall party for the wealthy: stiffly dressed men and women shuffle around tables of cocktails and hors d' oeuvres, leaving food mostly untouched on small plates as quiet conversation weaves in and out of the small clusters of the recently reacquainted.
14. “It's five tents; I think I'll make it.”
15. The seventh time in ten minutes that Jack calls her, she finally answers her phone.
16. It starts out as comfort: Sun plants flowers now.
17. Six more are gone.
18. Kate first sees her on the last day of the trial, sitting inconspicuously at the back of the courtroom.
19. Kate removes herself from the small group waiting on the beach (“there's only room for six,” and who hadn't even been up to them).
20. It's not until she calls the sixteenth J. Kwon in the Los Angeles phone book that Kate finally hears a familiar voice on the other end of the line.
21. Katie stomps the small mound of dirt down and rests her arm across the handle of the shovel.
22. The sky's not exactly red (but almost) and Kate's never been one for superstition, but still, she recalls the old J-boat captain's oft-quoted proverb.
23. The plane is going down and Jack smiles.
24. It turns out they really do listen to Patsy Cline everywhere.
25. As they stared each other down, she despised him for this.

Patterns/Observations:
-I tend towards either the simple and choppy or the long and rambling.
-I write a heck of a lot of Kate (not that this is any sort of surprise).
-All present tense except for the last one (which was RP-based, and therefore different).
-I have written exactly 25 fics in 2008 so far (not counting the two lyric parodies, and counting the RP based fic, which technically was written the previous June, just posted this year).
