I was googling the second I finished watching all of BSG! I was an LJ member already. I mainly followed the Devil Wears Prada fandom Miranda/Andy pairing. I suppose before that I did read other fanfic, Whoniverse (no particular pairing, gasp, it didn't even have to be romantic at all! innocent days!) and Jane Austen fanfics were the earliest stuff I read...!! pre-LJ days. Again really quite innocent!
I don't think I am a member of fanficnet or use it much either.
I'm on twitter but as Openly Me In Real Life so it is a bit different. MM and EJO are on there though *g* I'm under the impression tumblr is a)scary b)for the kids not me
There is a mad exodus? In the fandom or on LJ as a whole? I think...LJ is a totally different to that kind of picspammy microblogging stuff. Maybe it is a niche thing but I'd rather LJ be a cosy niche than a vaste unmapped 'here be dragons' thing.
I've never followed a fandom as long as that...I suppose the whoniverse has a fan writing tradition as long as the show itself which is 50 years or something! so the people who watched it as kids now write for it etc, but that has the thing of still being going so constant new fans coming in. A finite series...maybe the fanfic reaches a point of saturation, but the 'classic' fanfic will stand the test of time and exciting things will still happen just less often. I'm seeing this with the DWP fandom, there are a lot of similar stories out there now and a lot of people putting un-betaed or even google translated unproofed stuff and it makes me fussy about what I bother reading all the way through. I'm all for people writing, I'm sure I've written more unreadable stuff than readable stuff!
what i don't understand is why?! WHY WHY WHY would you do this??? D: i heard a friend of mine used google translate to do the other way round (translating in italian english fanfics) and she was terribly frustrated and kept asking me: what does it mean? could it mean something else? LOL
Well, to be kinder, I would guess it is just a sign of enthusiasm for the fandom and wanting to share & be part of the community. I guess there's a whole world of non-English language fans out there, I don't know what it is like not speaking English, perhaps those of us that do have it easy in fanfic world!
as one of the non english language fan i can tell you my english improved reading and participating in fandom activities, way more than just grammar study in HS =P you're right, probably it's the need to be read and to express yourself... still i die a little inside thinking about all those years i spent on books studying foreign languages and people trusting their comunication to google translate ;_; funny, i think i wrote one or 2 fanfictions in my own language and at least 7 in french XD
Perhaps it's EJO who's tweeting, but I would still presume it's MM's PA. For some reason I just don't see her sitting at the lappy doing it. Perhaps one of her kids do it for her. *snort*

Tumblr is not really scary, but I just don't see why so many people are thrilled with it and raving how wonderful it is. It's okay. But I'll cross my fingers they change a few things to make it easier to use.
Yes, I'd call it a bit of an exodus. Or rather people going there and becoming lazy. They have the 'like' buttons and you can happily lurk. The fun thing about fandom is people talking to each other! I don't want lurking!
Mmm...Yes, I think Dr Who might be in a class of its own. Perhaps bsg might last a little longer than DWP because it was a 4 season show and not just a movie. Let's hope! I love writing for Bill and Laura and can't imagine a time when I don't. *sniff*
Yeah I wouldn't be at all surprised if either of them had someone else tweet for them, EJO goes through bursts of lots of tweeting and retweeting, all campaign-related really. He's so intense! But it is quite fun (both MM and EJO) to get the occasional photo. It's like they are real people OMG! :-D
i can read the most heated discussion on tumblr and it's all reblog+comment, much more than on LJ (and they're all so judging LOL XD) sometimes it's really entertaining because you can use images to make your point, moving images!! =D i dunno, i am touched by images more than words probably =P and YES! you can LURK!!! and i like to read other people thinking, sometimes i shake my head, sometimes i nod LOL and it's an open discussion, i can even reblog other people's comments without writing myself, so my lfist can read too =D
there are a couple of browser extensions you can use to make your tumblr experience easier =) i'm using missing-e, works great on firefox, not so much on chrome. i was kinda WTF myself the first time i went on tumblr... but i caught up faster than LJ, LJ is really user unfriendly! -,-
LJ is still better for fanfiction reading and commenting tho, most people only link to other sites on their tumblr and i think you could do the same if you start using tumblr =P
reblogging is ok and expected. what's not to do it change the listed source and erase credits (like everywhere else) i found a post with an awful low quality version of my bill and laura on a bike chibi last month and when i asked the girl if she wanted a better version of it in exchange of taking down the irking, uncredited one, she was very happy =P assholes are everywhere but so are good people XD on tumblr my post can be seen from people not on my list if my list reblogs it and comments it and people on their list can do the same and somewhere along the line there might be someone changing the source of the post or altering it with a sarcastic comment or another graphic but it's still a way of having an exchange even with people not on your list. it's more... open, in a way
ok... now it's not that i want everyone to have a tumblr, i was just telling what i like about that site that probably is a bit misunderstood by non users =P and yes, it's a black hole for your time D:

One of the major problems I have with tumblr is that there seems to be nowhere to go when you can't work out something! If I didn't know you girls from LJ first, I wouldn't have a chance of knowing what/where/why/how.
Plus, it's the whole instant gratification generation thing. 'I can just press a like button!'
But, I can see, from a person into graphics like yourself, that it must be much more satisfying than LJ.
