Chapter Ten: In Which They Cross the Barricade

“How are you going to slip us past all of that?”

Patrol cars and officers were positioned at every end, and break, in the police barricade; which was slowly expanding away from the student center to encompass more of the campus.

“I was going to cause a bit of a distraction, and then wave my badge around.”

“Man with a plan,” Kara drawled, though the look in her eye showed that she was curious as to what he could do that would be distracting.

Laura was about to offer a suggestion, when a loud grumbling brought their whole group to a halt. She could feel Bill's grip on her tighten; and Zak's hand slid towards the gun on his belt. They were on the outskirts of the park, still in full view of the road.

Saul Tigh, the veteran who normally slept on the sidewalk near the Green House, stumbled into view; knit cap almost ready to leap from his head. The can clutched in his hand rattled with every step, and he looked about ready to keel over. When he spotted their odd procession he froze, squinting at them with his one good eye.

“Have you heard the announcements?” Zak immediately slipped into officer mode. “This area has been cleared of all civilians.”

Bill, Kara, and Laura stayed at his side, trying to appear as innocuous as possible.

“Like I give a frak about a bomb,” he grumbled back, scratching at his full beard with dirty nails. “No terrorist is going to strike fear anywhere by cleaning up this city's homeless problem.”

Zak looked a little dumbfounded at the response. It was the same perplexed and uncertain look Bill had gotten when Laura had showed him that she could access the internet on her phone. The similarity made her smile.

“What are you lot doing? Sneaking around?” Saul asked.

Laura suddenly had a very good idea.

-

“Laura, I'm not sure if that was a very good idea.” Bill kept looking over his shoulder, and when his steps slowed, she had to tug on his arm to remind him to keep moving.

“Nah,” Kara interjected. “It was brilliant.”

“Thank you,” Laura sniffed.

Bill still didn't look too happy about leaving behind his son with a slightly inebriated war veteran. She figured most of his worry had to do with him not wanting to see anyone precious to him out of sight while on such a dangerous mission. After all, Saul Tigh's disposition could hardly be the worst Zak had dealt with as a cop.

“Now quiet you two,” the barista hissed. “It's hard enough to hear the radios without the chatter.”

Bill glowered at the blonde's back, and Laura patted his arm soothingly. They settled themselves behind some shrubbery, watching the line of policemen. Eventually, one lifted his radio, and they could just make out Zak's call for assistance.

“Adama should be able to clear a drunk and disorderly no problem,” one of the officers complained loudly.

“Well maybe this isn't your typical drunk. There's a terrorist out there, isn't there?” Another responded, gathering several others with him and moving out to assist the younger Adama.

The lone policeman left at the barricade spent one second looking bored before he moved to his patrol car to sit on its hood.

“Now or never,” Kara whispered.

“That man can still call for help, we don't wan to make a scene,” Laura hesitated.

“Old Man can knock him out.”

“Excuse me?” Bill asked.

“He isn't our goon squad,” Laura backed him up.

“Look, you two want to stop this bomb or not? Don't hurt him, just..”

“Knock him unconscious?” Bill drawled.

“Yea,” she grinned crookedly at the pair of them.

“Fine,” he grumbled. “You two stay back here.”

“What are you going to do?” Laura interjected. “Walk up and ask for the time?”

“Sure.”

Before she could protest further, he marched out of their hiding place and made himself known. The officer jumped up, hand straying towards his gun.

“Hold it!” He called out.

Bill held up his hands, but didn't stop moving forward.

“Hold it, I said!” With slightly shaky fingers he pulled his gun from his holster.

“I'm a little lost.”

“Oh, that's so much better,” Laura muttered.

Kara sniggered at her side.

“This area has been cleared of civilians, what are you doing here?”

“Has it?” Bill spoke calmly, only slowing his pace as he got within several feet of the young man. “I think I got turned around.”

Laura felt her mouth go dry as he inched closer to the weapon, suddenly terrified. What if their stupid taped together plan got Bill shot? She didn't even realize she had started moving until Kara grabbed her arm.

“What are you doing?” She hissed.

“I can't just stand here, I've got to help him. That man's about to shoot him.”

“You burst out there now that guy's definitely going to flip.”

“But-”

“You two can come out now.”

Startled, she and Kara turned back towards the barricade. Bill was looking towards them, amused, while he rubbed the knuckles of his right hand. The policeman was sprawled out on his back at his feet.

“We saw the whole thing,” Laura insisted to Kara before dragging her out into the open.

“Right,” the young woman barely resisted the impulse to roll her eyes.

Bill, looking a little smug at his accomplishment, readily accepted Laura's quick hug.

“C'mon,” she pulled back, resisting the urge to kiss the satisfied look off his face lest she get too distracted. “We've got to get going before the rest of them get back.”

“One more thing,” Bill knelt down and took the gun from the officer's limp fingers.

“Do you think that's really necessary?” Laura eyed the weapon distastefully.

“We have no idea what we'll be walking into, I'd rather be prepared.”

“I cast my vote with him,” Kara piped up.

“Oh, alright, let's go.”

-

After wrestling Tigh into the back of one of the cruisers, where the veteran promptly passed out and began snoring, Zak turned his attention to his fellow officers.

They had returned to find Rodger out cold on the ground, and Daniels was now helping him back into the land of consciousness while Terrance called a medic.

“C'mon Rodge, what did he look like?”

“Old suit.. not that tall.. kinda, kinda like Zak.”

Daniels frowned. “Maybe your brains got a little too scrambled.”

“No, no they..” He reached for the holster at his side. “My gun!” He leapt up from the ground. “He took my gun!”

“Woah, calm down,” Daniels placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“No, no calm!” Terrance snapped. “Are you saying you let a terrorist into the grounds and armed him?” He reached for the radio at his belt and began issuing the new warning. Suspect armed and on the move, location unknown.

Zak felt a little queasy all of the sudden. If the police caught up with his father first.. Well, there would be no one to stop the actual bomb. And what would happen to those with him? Laura, officially wanted for questioning by Cain? And Kara.. they wouldn't hurt Kara, would they?

“I'll head out now, sir,” he spoke up. “Try and catch up.”

Terrance nodded. “Keep in contact, I'll send someone else to join up with you in a minute.”

“Of course sir.”
