Prompts: Battle ensues, mutiny, celebration, anniversary, make up sex, diplomacy, big guns, this time last year.

Small waves stretched out before them, a slight breeze propelling them south at a leisurely pace. Bill was in no hurry. Laura deserved a break, and a week long voyage back to the Keys seemed to be exactly what she wanted.

He looked back to find her still there, lying on the deck with her eyes closed, letting the late afternoon sun warm her body. The chill in the air kept her below deck most of the morning and evening, but she all but worshiped the sun once it moved over head.

His insistence that she reapply sunscreen every two hours had become their first real fight. She’d fought him, saying she was a big girl and that she needed the color. He parried with the concern that a sunburn, or worse, sun poisoning were the last things she needed. Stubborn as always she insisted that she was a grown woman and could tell when she’d had too much sun.

He reminded her, rather more harshly than he meant to, that her treatments made her much more prone to the harmful effects of the sun, but she still refused to acquiesce until he brushed his hands over her shoulders and promised that he would personally apply it as needed. It was a completely selfish gesture as far as he was concerned; he hadn’t been able to get enough of touching her since they’d been reunited. He was happy to have an excuse to indulge himself.

She was getting her sea legs now, three days into their weeklong journey, so much so that he didn’t notice her approach.

“This is mutiny, you know,” Bill said with a chuckle as Laura squeezed in between him and the Blackbird’s wheel, pushing his hands off so she could helm the boat.

She snuggled back against his bare chest, his skin bronzed and warmed by the sun a stark contrast to hers. He kissed her head, the smooth fabric of her sage green scarf shifting beneath his lips.

“You didn’t put up much of a fight," she said, teasing him.

He wrapped his arms around her thinning waist. “Maybe I want to be overtaken.”

The hum that came from her throat signaled her contentment, but held a hint of something else. “What?”

She shook her head.

“Come on. Don’t hide from me,” he whispered in her ear. “What are you thinking?”

“That a year ago I could never have even imagined I’d be doing this.”

“Sailing a boat?”

“That, and other things. Fighting cancer, leaving my life, my work, my home, to be with a man I’ve known for barely six months.”

Had it really been six months? Bill could hardly fathom that. The time seemed to have raced by and yet he also felt as if he had lived his entire life over again through her eyes. He knew she had only come into his life recently, but it was like slipping on a pair of glasses, his whole world just looked different, even the parts she didn’t directly touch, simply because she touched him.

“Six months, huh?”

“Yup. On Tuesday.”

“We should celebrate.”

She rolled her eyes. “You’re not one of those people who celebrates weird anniversaries, are you? I’ve never understood that.”

“We don’t have to call it an anniversary. I just thought, maybe I can catch us a nice striper, we could stop off somewhere and get some fresh vegetables. Make it a night. We should just about be to Miami by then. We could go dancing. Come back here. Make love on the deck.”

“That does sound nice.”

“We have a lot of making up to do.”

She playfully wiggled her butt in his lap and he pulled her hips to him. She’d been weak and tired when he’d first met her on the dock in Annapolis, but her strength, and her libido were slowly returning as she got further away from her last treatment. He knew it wouldn’t last, but he hoped they would take advantage of it a few more times before she got set up at Lower Keys Hospital.

“You’re playing with fire, Laura Roslin,” he said has he kissed her neck.

“I like fire,” she told him and then turned in his arms to give him a deliciously long kiss. “But I love you.”

It was only the second time she’d said it, and it made his heart soar; his next kiss tried to show her just how much.

When they parted she looked at him, her eyes soft and full of sincerity. “Let’s save the celebration.”

He hated the morbid thought that crossed his mind. What if we don’t have another six months to wait?

“For what?” was the only thing he managed to get out, steeling himself for what might be their second fight. He wanted to do something special for her while he still had the chance.

“For our wedding.” Bill stared at her, shocked. He had expected a round of diplomatic negotiations where this topic was concerned. He thought he’d have to talk her into this and he was ready. He had all sorts of reasons to convince her. His insurance would cover her immediately, despite the pre-existing condition, it would automatically give him power of attorney and make him her health care proxy. But no, instead she had brought out the big guns first and fired straight across his bow.

He was sunk. He was hit and he was going under, had been going under since the first time he laid eyes on her. “Did you just ask me to marry you?”

“No. I told you you were going to, just as soon as we get back and can arrange it.” She cocked the last of her thinning eyebrow at him. “Is that a problem?” His heart leapt at the hope and promise in her tone and demeanor.

“Well, I guess since you’re the skipper of this boat now, and you outrank me, I’ll have to do as you say.”

“Forever?”

He pulled her in close and gave her the sweetest of kisses, just like their first. His mustache still tickled. “And always. I love you, Laura Roslin.”
