I think that it was love poetry of some kind. And from what I can tell from screen caps, it's Bills glasses resting on the cover when the camera pulls away.
This is my theory at the moment (I will likely change my head!canon if someone has a better idea :P) :
I think that Bill brought it with him to read to her, as a way to be all seductive and romantic with her. But when he got there, Laura had the pretty candles all ready to go (assuming they were her prayer candles), because she was trying to seduce him. So they both gave up trying to be seductive and considered themselves well seduced. After several rounds of love-making (hey haters, they had like YEARS of pent up UST to work through. I have faith that Bill successfully rose to the occasion! Several times! :P) they also considered themselves to be well frakked
( ... )
"Why thanks for asking DN! I'll be happy to give you my opinion!"
*snort* I can't help it. I LOVE ADFMS OKAY!?!?!?!?!?!
Great, now I have the image of Kermit the Frog flailing his arms...
Hey, hey! I'm not green Missy! And I got over my "green hair" phase when I was like 14, after my parents threatened to kick my sorry ass out if I didn't change it. :P Heh.
It took multiple screen caps and various people pointing out the book (and their waylaid glasses) for me to even noticed them. What? Everytime I watch that scene I just stare at them and try to hold back my squee'ing so that the windows don't shatter. It took several smutty pieces of fanfic before I even realized they were in Laura's guest quarters and not Adama's cabin. (though, that's all tangent- I'll get back to the topic)
Looking at it pragmatically (look at me, sucking the fun out of this) I think Laura definitely set up the candles. It's her space, she knew what she wanted- and after propositioning the Admiral she wanted mood lighting.
I think the book is Searider Falcon and they finished it, many, many times. In all ways except the literal one.
It took me a while to 'take the whole scene in' too! But I actually loved that. You can watch the scene again and again and seem something new each time.
The whole set dressing does crack me up with the book and the glasses and the candles. I mean, really?
Why, let's read for a while, and perhaps do a full body massage by candlelight, then FINALLY HAVE SEX AFTER FOUR YEARS AND SEVERAL NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES BECAUSE WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD.

But what is wrong with that? IT'S ROMANTIC AND SWEET OKAY!?!?!?!?!?!
do you think bill would get down on her as soon as he enters her quarters like they have less than 5 mins and a quick frak against the wall would do??? O.o noooooooooooo, he'd take his time... took 4 years to get there, what a few minutes more could do =P
This may be way off base...I've not gotten a great screencap of this yet. But I wonder if it might be a journal, maybe written in the style of "Searider Falcon", maybe where she keeps the lines she would like him to read some day. And as soon as he gets up to go to the head, she's so adding a few new lines :-)

Guys, I can't watch this scene without flailing my arms like a damn fool. Don't judge.
