Trading Cards Galore: Two-Face and the Rogues Gallery in Skybox's "Saga of TDK" and "DC Villains!"

Apr 01, 2012 12:52

Back in the awful days of the 1990's--the era which DC, Marvel, and Image now seem hellbent on reliving in their own ways--superhero trading cards were prevalent, fitting in with the "EVERYTHING WILL BE A COLLECTIBLE INVESTMENT GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL" mentality that nearly sank comics as a whole. As with all things, most of these were crap, but there ( Read more... )

So help me, Bat-god, I will defend 90s Bat-comics to my dying breath. I can't speak for Marvel or the rest of the DCU, but I still hold that the 90s produced huge amounts of both outstanding masterpieces and decent, solid if unremarkable Bat-stories in general.

Okay, so I CAN'T defend some of the costume choices and newly created characters, but still...

The green/pink scars might just be the most horrific ones of all for Harv. I mean, his face looks like it's ROTTING away instead of simply being burnt.

Also, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for the link to the TCG site. Now I can complete my dual collages of Graham Nolan-drawn Jokers AND Ponytail!Jokers.

(Also also - Stelfreeze drew that spectacular Joker portrait? Hot DAMN! My respect for him just went up twenty points.)

None of these images, however, truly deserves the title of "90s Joker". That honor goes to Graham Nolan's kick-ass cover for HERO Magazine's "villain" special issue.

I like most of the Skybox art (especially Mignola's lonely-and-loving-it Squishy), but the only one of the Dark Judgment cards I really like is Black Mask. Go figure.

Heh. You think that the Dark Judgment Penguin is bad? A while back, I stumbled onto a TRULY horrific "reimagining" of Ozzie, that somehow managed to get an honorable mention in a Poser art contest. One fellow on CBR's Penguin Appreciation thread said that he'd only like Ozzie if the comics followed THAT take.

I posted a link here, but I don't think you ever screened it.

On to other matters... my vacation over here in the People's Republic has been mixed. Over in a bookshop the other day, I found Chinese editions of Year One and the Gibbons/Rude World's Finest mini, but I ultimately opted to buy a Detective Conan light novel instead. Please don't smite me.

Also, how come the Riddler/Ivy card is in Spanish?

And I'd be happy to write a Riddler/Ivy story... and in return, Captain & Henchgirl can write a "Joker gets EVERYONE to don ponytails!" story! XD

On another note, I think J's ponytail might actually be fake - a detachable ponytail doused in some chemical to create explosions/smoke/poison gas would make a great little getaway tool.

Oh no, no, don't ever feel like I'm badmouthing all the 90's Batman comics! I mean, I will tease and criticize them like hell, but I don't think they were ever truly destructive in the way that many other comics of that decade were.

Rotting, yeah, I can see that. It's also kinda... toxic.

You're very welcome! I was so overjoyed to see that such a site exists. If only all the scans were good, since many are grainy and crappy, but it's better than nothing!

The Black Mask really is awesome.

I remember you linking me to that Penguin image. I forgot to respond, but rest assured, I was horrified beyond belief. I actually saw that image pop up again when people mistook it for the Arkham City design. God help us all if that had been the actual version they used.

Also, how come the Riddler/Ivy card is in Spanish?

Because the scan I found here was of better quality than the scan at TCG.
