New Comics! A quick review of Snyder/Capullo's BATMAN #1, and the WTF ending of TDK #1 (SPOILERS!)

I know it's a week late, but I figured that I would be remiss in not giving a quick look at the opening pages of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman #1, which is being hailed by some as the very best comic to come out of the DCnU so farMy own reaction: it's good. Not brilliant, but good. It doesn't punch me in the gut, nor does it blow my socks ( Read more... )

It makes me ridiculously happy to see Squishy with Batman in a headlock.

In fact...

HEE!

Is that or is that not about the most physical damage that Squishy's ever been able to do to Batman?

Not necessarily. In his post-Joker-team-up story from KnightFall, you may recall, the Scarecrow stated that he was "not above a spot of rough and tumble", specifically the Crane Style (appropriate) of martial arts - "no defense against it, they say!". Of course, it didn't do him a lick of good against AzBats, and he's made little or no use of it since, but then, that makes sense - he prides himself largely on his mental abilities; it's not surprising that he's neglected his physical ones. Still, the point is that he CAN defend himself, when he remembers that he can.

As Henchgirl noted as she read this over my shoulder, anybody who describes themselves as being "not above a spot of rough and tumble" isn't someone who's actually capable of giving a good spot of rough and tumble. She even said it aloud in a Niles Crane voice, and really, that's not too far off from Scarecrow ( ... )

Personally, I have no problem with Scarecrow fighting. I certainly don't think that he should be all ABOUT fighting; that would defeat the entire purpose of the character, but I don't think it's beyond the pale, either. After all, Crane is all about the brainpower, and it doesn't strike me as all THAT unusual that a man as intelligent as him might decide that, considering that his usual opponent is a man of formidable fighting skills, it might behoove him to learn a little bit about self-defense. He may never exactly be GOOD at it, but him being able to defend himself with a punch or two would not really defeat the purpose of the character, I wouldn't say ( ... )

"She even said it aloud in a Niles Crane voice, and really, that's not too far off from Scarecrow."

This makes me want to finish my Batman/Frasier fanfic where I reveal Jonathan is the lost Crane brother.

Even when he was running around with a scythe, all he managed to do was disembowel himself.

...poor Squishy.
