Preview: Judge Dent and his wife in "Flashpoint: Batman - Knight of Vengeance"

DC's Source Blog--your regular output for official DC PR, previews, propaganda, what have you--has released a four-page preview of Flashpoint: Batman - Knight of Vengeance which directly focuses on Judge Harvey Dent, his wife, and their twins kidnapped by the Joker. Major spoilers for the end of Flashpoint #1, and although that particular spoiler was somewhat underwhelming in the grand scheme of spoilers, you've been warned.

For those who don't know, this is by the 100 Bullets/Batman: Broken City team of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso. That right there makes this a must-buy for me. Also, in this reality, it was Bruce Wayne who was killed in the alley, and a grizzled old Thomas Wayne is not only Batman, but also runs casinos in the whole city. He also seems like way more of a dickwad than even Frank Miller's Batman on his worst day.

Really, why has nobody heard of waterproof mascara anymore? While we don't get her character's first name, I can't bring myself to believe that she's Gilda. Or Grace Lamont, or Carol Birmingham, or Rachel Dawes, or whoever she's supposed to be. Okay, mayyyybe twit-face Rachel from Batman Begins. But not Gilda. Then again, even this reality's version of Harvey Dent is pretty darn unrecognizable as Harvey:

On one hand, I kind of like that we actually have a Harvey Dent who looks as young as Harvey was supposed to be in canon (only twenty-six or twenty-seven when he became D.A.!). On the other hand, damn, I have a hard time either buying him as a Judge or as Harvey Dent. On a nitpicky note, though: hey, he has blue eyes! Nice to see that some people actually remember that!

So yeah, Harvey's no friend to the story's heroes (or antiheroes, more likely), and may yet get that punch in the face when all's said and done. But for now, I remain mildly intrigued in this mini, and in Flashpoint in general.
