Hi All-

I had a surgical abortion at 8 weeks a week ago, and I have been meaning to post about it. I was most scared about how painful it would be, since the place I had to go to had no pain options (other than the shots to the cervix) and how it would affect my relationship with my boyfriend of a few months. You know, he seemed really great about it before hand, but there was no telling how he would feel afterward ("damaged goods" and all that). So here goes:

The procedure was not painful AT ALL for me, I was so happy and relieved. The lidocaine shots hurt a lot, but last for seconds, so no real complaints. As for the actual procedure, I didn't even realize they were doing it (I thought they were just preparing the vacuum-ey thing and stuff) until they said "almost over" and then it was done. I think the dilation and the actual procedure took 3 or 4 minutes. I couldn't even believe it was done and over with and felt like nothing had happened, so that's good.

As for my boyfriend, he reacted perfectly fine to everything, I just gave him instructions beforehand of ways to seem caring/supportive afterward, like asking about how I'm feeling and reading over the normal/abnormal reactions list. And he doesn't look at me differently or act differently, I think he's basically forgotten about it--not in a bad way, but in a back-to-normal, let's-make-out type of way.

Now the only thing I want is for my body to be back to normal and to stop wondering if every sharp pain I'm having is a potentially life-threatening side effect.

My question is about afterward. Has anyone else had really bad IBS-type bloating and gas pains and stuff? I've had symptoms before around my period, but this is like, severe, and lasting for days, every morning and night like clockwork. Sometimes it hurts just to walk because my belly is so big and I can feel all my food and gas move around but it's pretty sharp and scary, so I hope that's all it is. They say severe abdominal pain is nothing to mess with online, but I don't want to jump to any conclusions. The clinic has ruled out anything really bad (ectopic, etc...) or UTI or anything, so I just wondered if anyone else felt this way afterward and how long it took to go away?
