Let me make this clear... I hate research papers. I hate research papers for several reasons... one of which being my hatred for the classic Modern Language Association (MLA) format for citing sources. Such an extravagant and specific format for citing work is not necessary, nor is it useful in any way. Number one... there are easier ways to give credit to authors of quotes and ideas borrowed and used in a paper with out having to worry about losing points on trite details such as the correct combination of spaces and periods. Number two... I don't see why a college professor would enjoy having to spend his time looking through a separate sheet of paper checking to see if the periods, colons, semicolons are in the right space, and if the right thing is in quotations and which phrases are underlined correctly without it having to do with the actual paper itself. MLA is too specific, and too damn picky.
Another reason I hate research papers...
Why is it that you can never find the things you're looking for... despite the fact you're trying everything you can typing in the most vague to the most specific things you can into a search engine, only to find that none of the things you've looked up have any use what soever?
I am currently attempting to write a research paper for my english class on my major/future career. What should've been the easiest and shortest paper of the semester is turning out to be the one that is taking me the longest to complete. No matter what I type, what search engine or search tools I use, I cannot get a damn thing I want. All I need to do is find a web site or article with someone telling me what I already know, simply so I can quote the article and cite it. Now... what seems like an easy task has, thus far, been difficult as hell. All I need to do is find job descriptions, some starting salaries, and maybe some required/re commended education, but I have found none. There are plenty of articles with people's opinions on journalism in itself, and a surprising amount of studies on African Americans and their opportunities for entry level positions in a news room... but no job descriptions, no specifics, and nothing I can use. All I need are some quotes from a credible author saying "On average, journalists spend 55 to 65 hours a week in the news room," or "Starting wages for entry level positions vary between 20,000 and 35,000," and yet I find none. I know this shit... I've researched it before. But because it is looking to be impossible to work around the pathetic quotes I've found... I can't produce anything above drivel. This is sad. Especially considering I did a better job researching careers in my sophomore year in high school than my freshman year in college.
Bah humbug I say.
