For the first time in a couple of years I have no finals to take or grade this December, giving me in effect an extra week of winter break. This means I can leave for England sooner and spend time with my family in the last half of December (the last two years I think I've got in on the 23rd). So, I was planning on doing a little travelling: any-one else fancy a long weekend or midweek break somewhere?
I'm expecting the British (do I have any non-British Isles European readers? don't think so) readers to only be up for something in Europe, and the Americans to only be up for something in North or Central America. I only really have time (and money) for one trip, but I'm not expecting to be deluged with people wanting to join me at short notice (I'd like to get this sorted this week, while trans-Atlantic flights are still cheap). Whatever I do, I'll be spending most of my time in Hertfordshire and hope to visit people in London and/or Oxford depending on where people are when.
Restrictions are:
- I'll probably hang around in Berkeley until the 18th of December
- I want at least a whole two weeks with my family (not nec. consecutive)
- I want to be in the domus familius on the 24th and 25th of December
- I don't ski
Anywhere with either stunning natural features, or interesting cultural things to visit are on the table. A good selection of restaurants and bars would be handy too.
If noone wants to come with, my plan will be this:
12/19 Fly to UK
1/2 Fly to Rome
1/8 Fly to SFO
(Rome is enough of a "pilgrimage" that I'd be happy enough doing it on my own, but I'm happy to delay it a while if someone has a better idea).
