one of my students just called me to say that she has not been in my class yet bust wants to meet with me tomorrow to discuss her taking the final exam and not coming to any of my classes...WHAT! i told her that it would be impossible for her to pass my final if she did not come to any of my classes because my final is a presentation, NOT WRITTEN,

i can't believe that one dinner was all it took for that student to "earn" what they wanted!

guanxi sort of pissed me off, because it always seemed based - essentially - on money, which seemed counter-intuitive to the ever-spouted communist propoganda. then again, what do i know? what do you think about it?

I consider guanxi to be one having connections with a person or group that will in return allow one certain favors or fringe benefits from the relationship. I believe that guanxi from what I have seen comes in two forms. There could be more. First, there is the person with money who thinks they can buy their way out of any mafan they come across with expensive gifts, dinners or outings. Then second, there is the other type that stems from one person knowing another person for a period of time and having built a relationship of trust and friendship during that period of time

thanks for keeping your fingers crossed, that was cute to read. I think/HOPE everything is okay now, but now my whole application process is pushed back at least a month...whatever as long as I get it, that's all that matters.

No worries, I am applying to do the same thing I am doing now, except with the Peace Corps. I believe I will get a different, possibly more enriching experience, and fulfill a long time dream of being part of such an amazing organization.
