Although the words "democracy" and "freedom" are used almost interchangeably, the concepts are completely unrelated. Democracy is nothing but the power for the demos. We can reinterpret the demos as "people" (although that is not strictly correct) but even then - it is the POWER for the people. Not freedom for the people, not human rights, not equality - just power. Power for the people without freedom for them - this is the purest form of democracy. And this is where it inevitably arrives, unless measures are taken to defend the freedom from the power.
Interestingly, democracy was invented in places where most people where stripped of any freedom whatsoever and converted to slaves. Try to check the ancient Greek word for "freedom" - don't think you have ever seen it. The original democrats had little to say about freedom and didn't care much about it. Neither do the modern ones.
