...This most certainly is not Ivalice.  Would there, by any chance, be a young man named Balthier anywhere near here?  I'm certain he's found a way to make his name known already.

My apologies, but I've never seen anything like you before!

...Of course not. I am not a "thing".

What exactly are you?

I am a Viera. What exactly are you?

An elf, of course.

Viera? I would love to know more!!

An... elf?

Ah... More? Such as?

Yes, an elf. We live for hundreds of years-- and have the ability to cast magic.

Viera... I noticed your accent is different. Do you speak a different language? If so, what? What is the writing style used by your people? Common religious practices?

I see.

...Yes. We are fluent in many languages. The Wood teaches us all we need to know of the outside world. I am an exception, however, as I left the Wood and learned much more about Ivalice than many of my people ever have the chance to. Viera are much like elves, it seems. We also live hundreds of years and can cast magic.

And the Wood? What is this?

I'm noticing a similarity in isolationist tendencies... Elves are not often seen outside of Heimdall...

The Wood is an entity called the "Golmore Jungle" by the Humes. It is a great living thing that the Viera live with. We are it's children, and thus can hear it's voice. There are many enclaves of Viera scattered throughout the Wood, and I lived in one that was called Eruyt Village. I left, however, and thus was considered dead to my people.

Mm. Most certainly. My sister Jote put it this way: "The Wood is for the Viera, Ivalice is for the Humes." However, more and more Viera are leaving the Wood, just as I did.

This is the reverse in Sylvarant! Fascinating!

So, it is impossible to hear, much less understand, the Wood if you are not a viera?

Hmm... [jots down some notes]

Oh?

Yes, quite impossible. However, if a Viera leaves the Wood for an extended period, such as I have, they can no longer hear Her at all.

[Fran seems amused.]

I suppose it would interest you to know that female Viera live apart from the males, as well?

Yes.

The Elves have lived in isolation for thousands of years now, having returned to their own village after warring with the humans.

Why is it that a viera can no longer hear the Wood after leaving?

Of course!! Why is this?

I see. And the reason for that would be...?

Because the Wood rejects the children who have rejected Her. She... Hates us.

Mm, no other reason than the fact that we find no reason to live together. We come together when need demands it.
