"You are the cocoons and we are the butterflies."
-Dan Savage
Dan tends to speak in hyperspeed just a little too much for me at times, but what's in his heart is actual and pure. He is a warrior and he is a conduit. The modern human rights movement sometimes needs voices that charge ahead and that shake the foundation. Savage is that voice. He is thoughtful and learned and that makes him dangerous. We all have paths and our journey is about finding them, and it seems to me this young man has not only found it, he's embraced it with a zeal that's contagious and joyful. He relishes his time here on the planet and he knows he's exactly where he needs to be.
We are not fighting for marriage. We are not fighting for monetary equality. We are fighting to be seen and to be heard. And as the world does that, as the earth beneath us accepts that, the people who stand on it will as well. Sound travels and has since the very beginning. All sound from eons back has been swirling around us like a tornado, landing here, landing there, and we either receive it or we don't. The world is changing and the people who are listening are the ones who are changing with it. The ones who turn a deaf ear, are still frightened and confused. Our job is to help them through the process of the text that's already in existence, and Dan does this succinctly and powerfully. This is his job and it fills me up every time I hear him.
