I was just reading the introduction/dedication page in somebody's dissertation. It looks like it took him 15 years of grad work.
The poor guy. Neither of his parents lived to see his Ph.D. completion. That's not all that uncommon.
But his *wife* also died in the time between his master's thesis and his Ph.D. completion. He dedicated that dissertation and his entire academic career as a monument to her, the love of his life...
Sniff. I hope they had time to enjoy life together outside of work...I gathered that there were no children....
