I came up with several in just a few minutes...after reflecting on Danny and Lucy...and the dogs of my youth.
Some reasons to own a dog:
1. To receive unconditional love and loyalty.
2. To remind yourself that you are never so important as to be above picking up poop or mopping up vomit.
3. To see another creature's sheer joy in being alive and able to run.
4. To remind yourself that love is *acting lovingly, *not just feeling "love".
5. To remind yourself that life is transitory...and for some of us, it is very brief indeed. We humans have a gift to have so much more time to live....
6. To experience interspecies empathy/concern (nothing like a shaggy doggy back or two, into which you can weep your broken heart out)
7. To become accustomed to including another dependent creature into your sphere of cares and concerns.
8. To learn how to communicate with and understand an entity with vastly different physical and mental abilities than one's own, a companion who has a completely different experience of the "same" physical world.
9. To recognize the power of your loving touches.
10. To observe humility...and fight-to-the-death protectiveness in a single creature
