disturbing, terrible, amazing

The previous post was Sami's contribution to my livejournal.

As I walked to lunch today, I noticed something moving at my feet. I saw two striped yellow insects there, but something was wrong with one of them. I realized it was dead. It turns out that a wasp had severed the abdomen from a honeybee and was trying to roll it into a compact ball. That's when I noticed the kicker--the bee wasn't quite dead after all, but rather was waving its legs feebly in the air. All this despite having no lower half. It didn't take the wasp llong to compact the abdomen to its liking and fly away with it.

I did not know that wasps eat bees. I did not know that wasps can fly nimbly while carrying half a bee.Sami thinks that the wasp actually needed half a bee for an abdominal transplant for another wasp. This makes sense because it is illegal for wasps to kill each other for body parts, whereas bees have no civil rights in wasp society.
