[voice] it had been strange, even in a dream

[While over the past few days the draft has been threatening the lives of cast-mates and strangers and acquaintances alike Admiral Norrington has been fighting a battle of his own. He chose the evening of the fourth to investigate the purpose of that odd little bump on his wall. Flick ( Read more... )

[Sounds like someone doesn't know what electricity is. She responds, but sounds tired.]

The light is in a small glass container, yes? That should be a light bulb powered by electricity.

[Short, concise, and as far as he can tell there is no mischief lurking behind her words. Will wonders never cease?]

It is bulbous, certainly. The name is fitting enough.

[He considers this for a moment before replying,]

My thanks. Might I ask you another question?

Please, be my guest. [She's keeping herself in bed today, so some conversation is welcome.]

[He forgoes the question 'what is electricity'. He has encountered the word in books of natural philosophy, but rarely. It is a powerful, mysterious force. Perhaps it is simply another word for 'magic'.]

How is it that my turning this tiny lever on the wall brings about a brightening of the bulb on the ceiling? They are not connected. And also, how long does the brightening last if left alone?

They are connected, sir. The wires are just hidden behind the wall. You can break it open if you don't believe me.

And the light will stay on as long as you keep the switch up. Sometimes the tungsten will burn out, though.

I believe you.

[Or at least, he isn't about to go breaking the wall open.]

This is all quite extraordinary, but you - you speak as though I were asking how a door handle was operated.

Electricity is a common source of power in my world.

[To think that this would be common anywhere..]

It must truly be a fascinating place.

Maybe, but my world seems to be behind compared to a lot of others. Yours just might have not caught up yet.

[Well she certainly seems to have a head on her shoulders. If he can overlook the fact that she may have just insulted his entire world, she might even be considered polite.]

My name is Admiral James Norrington. It is a pleasure to meet you.

Winry Rockbell, and the pleasure is mine. Judging by your questions you're new to Luceti, aren't you?

I came in on the last boat, yes. Have you been here long?

At the end of this month it will be two years.

That long? I am sorry.

Don't be. It's not constantly bad here.

Certainly not, no. There are, for example, all manner of people to talk to.

[If one enjoys that sort of thing. Still, this girl seems an honest enough sort and he'd hate to sour her mood with his countenance.]

And these bulbs - I can imagine that they might have their charm. Once one has adapted to them.
