This LiveJournal entry is about Facebook.

I'm not one for the new-fangled applications Facebook has added, though I appreciate the idea of a community-based development. Anyway, I fight them off daily. The only one I did add, because I'm not one for absolutes, is SGO. That is, Sex, Gender, and Orientation. It was small, simple, and tasteful. Actually, I just wanted to say "tasteful."

And I was filling it out, and it brought up some questions. Questions about gender. Now, according to the Bem Sex Role Inventory, which is highly problematic, though the only one of its kind, though I wrote a paper one time badmouthing it, as did my neighbor across the hall, except she goes to Boston College, and we kind of bonded over not liking Bem, until we read this other paper by her that we both liked...

oh, geeze, sorry for that sentence. Anyway, according to Bem, my gender role is undifferentiated. Which is the opposite of androgynous. That is, androgynous is both man and woman, thus undifferentiated is neither. I was unpleased, which may have contributed to that paper I wrote.

But my neighbor across the hall pointed out other flaws, which I will focus on here. The Sex Role Inventory only allowed for four options, masculine, feminine, androgynous, and undifferentiated. Now, clearly, there is no question I present myself as a man, I identify as a man, I've got a male body...

But I don't think gender is that simple. Like, Luciano Pavarotti and Chuck Norris do not present their gender in the same way. My question comes down to specifics, descriptive explanations of gender. Though, also something simple, and with a focus on presentation, such as "cultured robust man," or "rugged badass dude," respectively.

Thus the ever self-indulgent question which I have not been able to answer over the past few days: what is my gender presentation?
