Katherine said something to me once which I promptly forgot about for two years. I remembered it a few days ago in relation to some of the limerence theorizing that has been going through my mind: is limerence really that unique?
Katherine said one of her friends believed herself to be ambidexterous (look, I used our word) because she had a crush on one of Katherine's close female friends. Katherine presented the opinion that this girl was not experiencing a romantic attraction, but simply that feeling you have for someone you really respect/think is cool and you just want them to like you. I was like, right, uh huh, whatever, Katherine, I think a person can tell the difference (but this girl, in retrosepct, probably couldn't).
So, over the past few weeks, I have been suddenly surrounded by all these cool new people who I was like LIKE ME, I AM WORTHY OF FRIENDSHIP AND CONVERSATION. And I was thinking, hey, maybe Katherine was onto something. Is limerence just this feeling plus the possibility of sexual attraction? Well, limerence demands exclusivity, this feeling doesn't. Limerence had intrusive thinking and limerent fantasy, those are nowhere near as prevalent. Is this really a distinct thing at all? Maybe these are people I'd have limerence for if I were attracted to them.
