The Doctor, Jenny and Cathie rush into the TARDIS laughing after another escape. They’ve been traveling together for the last 40 years. The girls need their lessons, which cannot always be taught on Earth. He is still glad he hasn’t regenerated yet. He does look older though. A few gray hairs here and there, more wrinkles. This body is now… oh… two hundred? He loves this body and he loves this life. Adventure after adventure with his girls with often visits to Earth. These were getting more often lately though. Rose is not feeling well but still refuses to use any of the more advanced medicine of the future worlds. “I’m not sick. I’m old,” she tells them once and again which breaks his hearts bit by bit. She is old. Exceptionally old for a human. Nearly a hundred. She’s never traveled with him after her last return from Pete’s world though. First she said Cathie was too young for traveling, and then she was getting too old. He didn’t agree at the time, but settled with what she offered him. Cathie. By Earth standards she’s a grown up woman, but merely a teenager in Gallifreyan terms. He watches his girls giggling while driving the TARDIS, which is much easier now as well - tree pilots are always better then one. The old Martha’s mobile rings and Cathie is happy to answer. As soon as she hears the voice speaking her face falls and she handles the phone to the Doctor with trembling hands.

“Doc, it’s Jack. Rose is dying.”

In complete silence they pull levers, push buttons… everything to get there on time.

She’s lying in her bed, her once long hair are short and silver. It’s hard for her to breath but she still manages a smile when she sees them. Jack and Luke are in the other room waiting. They are the only ones left of the once big family. Rose has outlived Mickey and Martha… and so many others. She motions her hand showing to the chest of drawers and Cathie rushes to do what she’s asked. In one of them she finds a letter, addressed to the Doctor. She gives it to him and sits on the bed to hold her mother’s hand while he reads.

“Show me the stars one last time” is all that’s written there. He swallows to fight back tears and nods.

“I’ll show you whatever you want.”

The Doctor gently carries her to the control room where a bed is already set for her. Jack, Luke and the girls follow him inside. He sets coordinates and lets the others to pilot his ship while he comforts his oldest friend. She’s been a part of his life for more than two centuries. The TARDIS stops gently and he picks her up once more. He stands there in the doorway, carrying her like the most precious thing in the world. She watches the supernova he picked up to show her, and he watches her. He can’t hold the tears when he sees the familiar wanderlust in her eyes, oddly young on her wrinkled face. She leans her head on his shoulder and he knows she’s tired. He knows she’s near her end and he just can’t let her go. Not just yet. He feels Cathie’s hand on his shoulder and turns his head to see her damp red face and thinks that his might look just the same. He feels Rose shudder in his arms and makes his way to her old room, which still has all her things scattered around, and lays her on her bed. She opens her eyes once more and takes his and Cathie’s hands. Her touch is so light it could be mistaken for a blow of the wind. She tries to say something and they lean closer but before she’s able to make another try she’s gone. They stay in there unable to move until Jack and Jenny gently pull them away.

It hasn’t been so quiet in the TARDIS since just after the Time War, even the ship’s humming sounds more quiet then usual. The Doctor, Jack, Jenny and Cathie gather around the table in the dimly lit kitchen. Tea. It does make things better. At least that’s what Rose used to say and they wish that was always true. One by one, they tell stories about her, about their adventures, about how brilliant she was and with every word the grief goes away bit by bit. A few hours later they even manage an occasional smile or a laugh at a particular amusing memory. A few more kettles later they are laughing freely as the Doctor tells them the story about Queen Victoria and his bet with Rose.

“You still owe me that tenner,” they hear an unfamiliar voice and turn rapidly to see the source of it.

A tall slim dark-haired woman is standing in the doorframe visibly busy exploring the insides of her mouth. “New teeth. That’s weird.” And then turning her attention to the group around the table, “Don’t look at me like that. It’s not that any of you are unfamiliar with the regeneration. You will still explain this one to me though.”
