i've met my share of people who thought this way in the past; of course they were sophmore poli sci and economics students.
her claim is based on a ton of assumptions to which i certainly don't subscribe. like the assumption that we're all seperate and isolated within our respective shells. science doesn't even agree with that premise anymore.
also, there's the dual assumption that 1.) they are NOT working, which is patently false, and 2.) that employment is some universal good that helps our fellow man. another falsehood.
as for their entire mindset, i would have to say that she know NOTHING WHATSOEVER of buddhism. have her do a search on the word 'Bodhisattva.'
"In Mahayana Buddhism, a bodhisattva has the compassionate determination to aid all beings on their quest for the highest state of development, full enlightenment of a Buddha. This type of motivation is known as bodhicitta ('citta' means mind). Remaining in this world of uncontrolled rebirth (samsara), the Bodhisattva has taken the bodhisattva vow to achieve Buddhahood as quickly as possible and thereby be most able to teach Dharma until all beings have likewise achieved enlightenment."
that's just a clip from Wikipedia.
their entire mindset is based on saving the world; if you're familiar with the story of siddhartha, his chief motivation was to free all people from suffering.
and, truth be told, we don't know how much good they may be doing. we don't know how much worse of the world might be if they weren't here. simply put, we don't know what we don't know.
