Lent

Well, it's Mardi Gras! I've decided what I'm giving up for Lent.

For those who don't know, here's the story behind lent:
Jesus was out in the desert for 40 days, during which he was tempted by the devil and fasted. So for lent we give something up as a reminder of the temptation which Christ rejected and we can reject too, and through that also, I think, be more thankful for what we have.

My "lent resolution" so to speak, is to give up...
EXTRANEOUS INTERNET USE!!

I am SO much less productive than I could be because I spend half my life procrastinating on facebook! Newsflash Abby: You're going to be graduating from college in 12 weeks and DO NOT HAVE A REAL JOB YET! I do not need to spend two hours a day on Facebook when I should be searching for jobs and filling out resumes.

But I can't just give up the internet, because it's too vital to my jobs and my life. (I work 40 hours and my teachers email me important stuff)

SO there are some rules to this internet thing:

1. I can check my webmail/email as much as I want
2. I can go on facebook only once a day; and for only 15 mins at a time (important messages get sent on FB too!)
3. All other websites I can visit on Sundays
4. For the news emails I get from NYT, BBC, McClatchy etc. I can read them after I finish ALL my homework from the week.

And THAT's it, unless it's related to my jobs. Trust me, this IS a sacrifice and I WILL be tempted.

So there we go. We'll see how it goes. Tonight's Fat Tuesday and Lent starts tomorrow, so I should stock up and spend all night on the internet....but I actually AM going to send in my resume so a couple places I've picked out.

On a religious note: Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and its probably one of my favorite of church holidays because it's about realizing that from ashes we came and to ashes we will return, so be humble and be generous and remember that you can't take it with you when you go. Be thankful for every minute because you never know which day will be your last; when it's your time, it's your time...and that's ok. There's no better time for me to take advantage of every second I have on this planet...by not wasting time on the internet!

It's especially relevant because it was on February 28th last year that one of my friends was killed when an 18 wheeler fell off the freeway onto the road below right on top of my friend's car. It really had an impact on the way I think about life. She had cancer too, and I bet she never thought that the way she died would be like that... It helps me to remember to love as much as we can and spend as little time upset as possible... because it's just NOT worth it.

And I love my boyfriend and am having dilemmas because I don't want to leave him, but I don't know what job opportunities are going to be available here and I don't want my parents to disappointed in me and blah blah blah...it's complicated but I'm sure it'll work out exactly how it's supposed to.
