'Being Human' thoughts

A vampire, a werewolf and a ghost share a flat. So says the premise of the BBC's Being Human. Part of me was, "Geez, another show with a vampire," and the other was, "Yay, another show with a vampire."

The first episode aired on BBC America last weekend and I think I can safely say that I'm really, really going to enjoy this. There's cuteness ( Read more... )

What are the Forever Knight similarities? The camaraderie between the three that is kinda like Nick, Schanke, and Natalie?

I heard someone mention this show sometime back and meant to check it out. I don't know how I feel about so many people changing the abilities of vampires. I like the old Barnabus Collins days with Dark Shadows where vampires only drank blood, had to sleep in coffins, and had to totally avoid sunlight. Also, the beast within was so powerful it was nearly impossible to control it. Forever Knight kept to that for the most part, besides the vampires not sleeping in coffins, but at least they still slept in dark rooms. *sighs* LOL

What are the Forever Knight similarities? The camaraderie between the three that is kinda like Nick, Schanke, and Natalie?::nods:: That's definitely one of them.Think Nick, Nat and Schanke in the coda of 'Last Act' when they go see Erica's play or the coda from 'Feeding the Beast'. There's a wonderful sense of friendship and understanding between George, Annie and Mitchell. A beautiful scene from the first episode had George reflecting to Annie about how difficult it must be for Mitchell, the vampire, to restrain himself every second of the day around humans. A recent tragic incident shed light on what a fine line Mitchell walks. It makes me long for the few FK fics I've read in which Schanke is aware of Nick's vampirism ( ... )

Thanks to a UK acquaintance, I've seen all six episodes of Being Human so far -- twice. The most obvious thing that BH has in common with FK is that vampire Mitchell and werewolf George would both rather be human again, if that option existed, like Nick. But I think the most important thing that BH has in common with FK is that it is a high-stakes universe. Yes, it does play with customary vampire canon in allowing some sunlight and food, but unlike so many vampire stories today, it maintains a very high price on supernatural abilities in isolation, alienation, the hunger, and all the rest ( ... )

I haven't started watching the show, yet, but I have them recorded on my DVR. I will watch it very soon. I'm waiting to see if I can get that first show I missed out on first, before plunging into it. It sounds like a good show, and hopefully, like abby82 and you, I'll be able to overlook the sunlight and food since it still gives reasons why they would want to be human and how hard the life of a vampire really is.

I'm really big on the Lacroix and Nick father/son or master/fledgling relationship, so it will be cool to see Mitchell's relationship with his sire.

Thanks for the info, and now, I'm really looking forward to how this season ends, as well!

Thanks for the rec! I haven't seen the second episode yet but you've definitely eased any concerns I had of it dropping in level of squee. :-)

Courtesy of a UK acquaintance, I've seen all six episodes of Being Human -- twice. This is the first new series I've rewatched in years. I think that the most important thing it has in common with FK -- the reason it doesn't grate like some elements of Moonlight -- is that it is a high-stakes universe. These "powers" come at incredibly high prices.

Six episodes only? Oh that makes me sad. I'm enjoy the series so much. I sure hope it's been picked for a second season.

Excellent observation. I'm really enjoying the depiction of George's journey. I don't think I've ever seen a werewolf's portrayal on TV before so it's new but there are still familiar elements.

On a side note, I loved Lauren's line to Mitchell about the vampire community. "It's like Hotel California. You can check in but you can never leave!"
