His Story - Sakurai Sho POV
~The Day I Realized What Kind of Person You Were To Me~
“Ne! It’s Reinne-chan!! I heard she’s coming back to Japan!” Aiba shouted loudly beside me and I glanced over at the magazine he was holding. The girl in the picture looked similar to… No, it can’t be. Maybe I’m hallucinating. She disappeared 7 years ago to somewhere; even my mother hasn’t heard anything about Reinne from her mother.
I wonder if she’s doing fine… Maybe she’s a doctor in another country. Or fulfilling her dreams of becoming a photographer…
“I’ll be back. Call me when we have to head to the set.” I said to Aiba, who just nodded his head, as he was preoccupied with looking in the magazine.
I let out a small sigh and went to the lounge area on the floor. I bought myself a can of cola and sat down near the window with a huge view of the city. It was 6 in the evening and I have one more filming to do before I can go home.
As I sipped on my cola and stared at the night sky, I started to remember her face, her smile and even her laugh. 7 years ago, I was devastated when I couldn’t contact her anymore. Why didn’t she at least say a goodbye to me before she vanished?
I always wondered where she left to. My heart always aches whenever I think about her. I pondered if my heart is trying to send me a message. I guess it’s trying to say that you should be worried about your little sister. Looking back on my memories, I’ve always remembered that she often tripped on her own two feet. She would get bruises and cuts easily so she often carried bandages in her pockets.
I continued to sip on my cola and then I received a call from Aiba. I threw the empty can in the recycle bin and started to walk towards the studio. I began to force myself to push my memories of Reinne to the back of my head.
~*~A smiled slowly grew on my face as I stared at the pictures that were hanging on the wall. Reinne had printed out her powerful and captivating pictures and displayed them in picture frames. And then my head slowly turned towards a cabinet filled with trophies and certificates with her name printed or inscribed.
It has been 5 months since I realized and confessed my love for Reinne. She is on a hiatus as a model and now is a professional photographer. She is really happy with her job although some people write about terrible rumors of why she’s taking a break, but she doesn’t really care and just ignores them.
“Sho-kun, do you want some tea?” Reinne shouted from her kitchen. She moved out of the condo that the company had provided for her and moved into a smaller and comfy apartment complex. Her neighbors haven’t recognized her yet however she is not worried if someone recognizes her, because her job now is as a photographer not as a model. However I feel worried about her. There is not much security as her previous house. What if someone stalks her during the night?
I shook my thoughts away from my head. I trust Reinne and she assured me that she will be fine on her own. But I visit her almost once a week so it should be fine…
I let out a heavy sigh and folded my arms. Before I wasn’t that worried about Reinne but now since I love her, I just want to protect her everyday.
I turned my head and stared at Reinne from her living room, which connects to her kitchen. I smiled and suddenly remembered Reinne’s old look.
She was dark skinned, boney and had a down-to-earth girl look. She always had a book in her hand when we attended school together and wore glasses because of her bad eyesight that she inherited from her father.
But the new look had surprised me. She would often wear brand name clothing, her hair would smell like hairspray and her skin was white and milky. In her hand would be a brand-name purse and she had contacts that made her eyes a different color.
Just within 7 years of not seeing or contacting each other, Reinne transformed from a girl and into a woman. Despite that, she still has the same personality as she had before.
Why did I just realize now that I love Reinne? Why was I so stupid before she came back? I made her change for me, so should I really be happy about that?
“Ne, Reinne-chan, do you mind if I ask you something?” I asked and my heart began to pound faster. “Do you regret having surgery?”
Reinne had stopped with what she was doing in the kitchen and I could tell she had a frustrated look on her face. Was she mad that I asked her that type of question? Or was she really thinking about it?
Reinne picked up her tray filled with a plate of cookies and two cups filled with hot green tea. She placed them on the coffee table and then served a cup to me and then to herself. After she placed the plate of cookies on the table before she sat on her couch.
I closely observed her expressions as I anticipated her answer. I didn’t want to upset her but I was curious and one of these days I was bound to ask her anyways.
She let out a sigh and looked at me. Suddenly she smiled at me and said. “At first, I did regret having surgery a few months after I was omitted out from the hospital. But as I trained myself to become a top model, I finally felt confident in myself and I started to realize that I shouldn’t keep my mouth shut because I don’t want to hurt myself. But…”
Reinne had a sad expression on her face and that made me a bit worried. She lowered her gaze and tightened her grip as she held onto the tray. “Truthfully Sho-kun, I didn’t want to tell you this but when we were growing up together, I was bullied and harassed by girls everyday because of my relationship with you.”
I widened my eyes and stared at her. Why didn’t anyone tell me? How come she didn’t come to me for help? “Reinne…” I muttered and she looked at me as she forced a smile. “They called me names, destroyed my books, threw stuff at me and they even threatened me to stay away from you. As you know, I didn’t have much support from my parents so I would usually ignore them and head to the library whenever you weren’t at school and dive my head into books. That is why I could always maintain a good score when it came to exams.”
I pursued my lips and my heart began to ache. Because of me she was hurt and I wasn’t even there, let alone know that she was getting bullied because of me.
I quickly got up and sat beside her. I embraced her in a hug and then whispered in her ear. “Gomenasai. From now on, I’ll protect you from anything that will make you sad or angry.”
She placed her hand on my shoulder and pushed me away. “The past is the past, Sho-kun. You don’t have to apologize to me. Now I can protect myself from anything.” She smiled at me before she pecked a kiss on my cheek.
I began to smile at her and then I kissed her on her lips. Afterwards I slowly took my lips off from hers and she looked like she was thinking about something.
“Ne, Sho-kun since we’re talking about our past, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you for a while.” She said as she stared right into my eyes. I furrowed my eyebrows at her and slightly cocked my head. “Hm? What is it?”
She slowly grabbed my hands and looked down at them. Then she asked. “It has been like forever since we’ve known each other and you said that you always looked at me like a little sister. But when did you start having feelings for me?”
I clenched my jaw tightly and as I stared at her, her eyes were sparkling with curiosity. I let out a small sigh and a chuckle. “I guess when I knew you were on a date with Nino-kun. I had this irritating feeling from my heart and felt like I just wanted to steal you away.”
Reinne began to chuckle and rested her head on my shoulder. She wrapped her arms around mine and said sarcastically. “Eeh… You were jealous of me being with Nino. If I knew that would do the trick then I would have done that a long time ago…” She muttered under her breath and I laughed. “But the me back then would still have considered you as a little sister.”
She smiled and I laid my head on top of her. “Let’s not talk about the past anymore. I keep remembering past memories that I tried so hard to forget.” I said depressingly.
Reinne laughed and suddenly intertwined her hand with mine. I smiled at her and we fell silent because we just wanted that moment to last forever.
I finally came to realize that the person who was always beside me is the only one for me.
