Claptrap in Illinois: I know that this was from a few weeks ago, but I've finally got around to posting about it. So, there was a hearing, which I believe is an investigation into some of the things that the mayor of Chicago has done. Most recently, a church burned down and the government there funnel roughly 1 million dollars to the church-goers so they could rebuild. Also, they funneled this money through a convicted felon. What is wrong with this? Perhaps could it be that government should not be giving tax dollars to religious organizations? So, anyway, Robert Sherman was testifying, I think he had been one of the leading people that said, "Hey, wait a minute, there is something wrong with this."
Some people might know him as the guy the sued to to have prayer taken out of Chicago schools. Though, this is inaccurate. What he had removed was a minute or something of "mandatory silence." People can still pray in school if they want.

So, anyway, he is testifying in front of many other representatives and people are asking him questions, etc. But then Rep Monique Davis (Chicago) interrupts him and goes on a tirade.

Davis: I don’t know what you have against God, but some of us don’t have much against him. We look forward to him and his blessings. And it’s really a tragedy -- it’s tragic -- when a person who is engaged in anything related to God, they want to fight. They want to fight prayer in school. I don’t see you (Sherman) fighting guns in school. You know?
I’m trying to understand the philosophy that you want to spread in the state of Illinois. This is the Land of Lincoln. This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God, where people believe in protecting their children.… What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous, it’s dangerous--

Sherman: What’s dangerous, ma’am?

Davis: It’s dangerous to the progression of this state. And it’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists! Now you will go to court to fight kids to have the opportunity to be quiet for a minute. But damn if you’ll go to [court] to fight for them to keep guns out of their hands. I am fed up! Get out of that seat!

Sherman: Thank you for sharing your perspective with me, and I’m sure that if this matter does go to court---

Davis: You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying! You believe in destroying what this state was built upon.

I would like to draw your attention to: "This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God."

Lincoln may have believed in god, but anyone who has done their research will find that he was, at best, a man of many eclectic religious beliefs. Perhaps he was a Deist, but he definitely didn't believe in the same god that she (Davis) does.

also, let's look at this line:
"Davis: You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying! You believe in destroying what this state was built upon."

The context? She was trying to kick him out of the hearing because he is an atheist. He was representing concerned citizens and had the right to be there

Even more disturbing is that during her tirade, other people/representatives were shouting "amen" during her unAmerican tirade and towards the end, she received an ovation.

She later apologized, saying something about that she was in a bad mood that day because she had learned about a school shooting in Chicago. Well, thanks for the shitty apology. The, "I'm sorry that I said those things because I was mad." At least we know how she truly feels about atheists in her 'land of Lincoln'

Also, there are things towards the end of the transcript that were left out, (that she says)

Well, here is a link to a video at Youtube. There is a bit of commentary at the start, but her tirade starts at 4:22 and continues to the end.
