Is anything really new anymore?

When thinking about the Internet, and technology in general really, one thing that constantly comes up is the idea of newness. It's just a quicker easier way to do what we already had ideas for, or we were already doing.

In the cafeteria there is one of many Poly inventions. It's a touch screen atm, all it is used for is to money on you meal card using cash. Now, did the poly thinker invent the atm machine? or did he just invent the touch screen? Or did he just use the touch screen that was already invented, the atm machine that was al ready invented, put them together and call it an innovation?

I have thought abut this a lot myself. I just discussed this same issue with my cousin who lives in Washington. Are Poly's inventions really inventions, or just piggy backed ideas al ready thought of?
