I think I've figured out why people always fall in love when they move abroad or study abroad. While watching a scene from Love Actually between the writer and his Portuguese housekeeper, it's obvious now.
In order to communicate when you don't speak the same language, you have to connect on a much deeper level. You actually have to look someone in the eye, and use behavior and emotion to simulate words and characters. I think when you have to actually try communicating something without saying it in a local tongue, you mean it so much more. And in turn, that means a lot more to someone - because it shows you're trying more than "Hello, how are you?"
