COMPLETELY OOC

[ I just wanted to update those who don't know. Last night Aaron, on his first shift of the game, was dumping the puck into the Flame's zone when he was hit by Flames Defensemen Robyn Regehr . I'm not going to get into a debate, there was no call on the hit, which was deemed legal. but upon watching the replays, it was my personal oppinion that only a complete and utter asshole would back into another player at high speeds. but I digress. It was unfortunate for Downey that he had his head down, and was short enough that Regehr's shoulder hit his jaw, restulting in his head being slammed into the glass. He was down for a long time, before wobbly, and very shakily getting up with help and being taken to the hospital with a severe concussion. He was being monitored, and is due to be reevaluated today. According to speculation and rumor he has been released and the out look isn't good. Diesel has a history of concussions, and as severe as this one is, he might not be coming back. I hope this is not the case, but if its up to his personal safety, he shouldn't come back. Its a shame to think about, I hear he is well loved in the Habs organisation, and you always hear how much he cares for his team. I'll keep people updated on the condition, but understandably, he's not going to be updating his journal for a little bit anyways.

Until such time as we get a full offical account of what is going on, I will not make any decisions as to if I'm going to keep him going. As far as I'm concerned, he's still here.

Oh, and thanks to Mikey for this letter:

Dear M. Playfair,

You are correct it was a huge hit. And if a huge hit can put a guy with the size and physical strenghth of Aaron Downey in the hospital, there has to be something iffy about it. Period. It's just unfathomable otherwise.

In an age when amateur and minor hockey are slowly shrivelling and dying because the game is being perceived as unsafe, it is perhaps time to take a much harder line with personal injury whether the intention of causing it was there or not.

I understand that it is your job to support your players but for everyone's sake, don't encourage this.

Sincerely,
Me.

Feel free to send it in to your local newspaper's letter to the editor if you want. its been sent to the Calgary and Edmontong Sun already. ]
