The 2011 Remake

(Actually, now that I think about it, this icon is appropriate for VL.)

So I've been reading a ton of posts related to VL:R's announcement, and pretty much all of them have been either "meh, I'll app a nonsense character" or "this is a terrible thing." And, again, pretty much all of them have been focused on the same point: that this is not the old ( Read more... )

A lot of people do seem to feel as if they'd be forced to app their old alts, which I obviously don't agree with. But ultimately I'd agree with smiko. It's not so much the alt thing that worries me as I don't really like the way they've structured the new theme. It seems to fix none of the problems with the old one, while introducing some brand new problems.

Now, obviously this is a) their choice, as I ain't gonna sit here and tell them how to run their game and b) anything can change before a game is open, particularly faction structure, so we're probably seeing the early ideas. But yeah, I am not really loving what I'm seeing thus far. (And when I last checked the comm, there was...someone I don't know shouting down my friends, some of whom were former VL staffers, for daring to criticize.)

I can certainly see how I would come off as arrogant to a stranger.

And to be fair, I probably am a little arrogant, but I also think I actually am in a position to speak (even critically) about related endeavors.

That arrogance was earned. You put years into that place. You're not above question, but you deserve respect when it comes to how much work someone's done for Videoland MUSH, and more than most people.

To quote Teron Gorefiend: "YOU WILL SHOW THE PROPER RESPECT!"

(flip up to 2:45 for an example)

I don't think it was so much arrogance as... It kinda felt like when Prismatic Spider would go off on someone on M3, if you know what I mean? It's not so much the content but how it was said, which is a common problem in these mediums. Don't worry, they are definately paying attention to your advice regardless.

I can see that. To be fair I've put a lot of (quiet, unremarked upon) thought into VL, which I kind of condensed in some haste into my big posts in the theory of "here, take these notes"

No problem, I'm sure it's appreciated regardless.

Amidst the cries of 'TOO EARLY!' (which are completely valid), thankfully there comes an opportunity to recognize and change these things.

What I don't agree with are people who say Gamemasters are horrible because it somehow... Infringes on them or something?

Here's the new director of the game explaining why Gamemasters... aren't necessary? But they're having them anyway because. (Also, he really wishes he could edit comments, so he can take back things he previously said, I guess.)

This uncertainty of vision is what is confusing me, and perhaps others also.

Maybe we should just make a TOO EARLY! image macro?

I don't think they're horrible. I think they aren't a major draw for people, and the way they were implemented on VL had heavy overtones of 'the ubermensch' as Mr. partanfan outlines above.
