The 2011 Remake

(Actually, now that I think about it, this icon is appropriate for VL.)

So I've been reading a ton of posts related to VL:R's announcement, and pretty much all of them have been either "meh, I'll app a nonsense character" or "this is a terrible thing." And, again, pretty much all of them have been focused on the same point: that this is not the old ( Read more... )

I don't think the response is very confusing at all. As Tom says below, most folks, well, finished VL. Can more be done with the theme? Sure. Is it what the staff seems to want to do with it? Doesn't seem to be.

I don't think the only issue is not wanting to pick up old characters--that's just one issue! In fact, for me, that's not really an issue because, well, I'd pick up new ones anyway. The big thing a new VL would do for me is the chance to play characters I couldn't play during the initial run. It's still an issue! But hardly the only one.

I think this post kind of ignores that this is simply one quality of the 'meh VL' posts--maybe I can see more of them but Tom does a pretty good job of summarizing the other points brought up, not including the one where some people simply think the staff involved would be terrible at the job.

I mean that is a thing.

Here's a list of issues I've seen in posts or pages, mostly the former.

1) staff quality
2) theme quality
3) strange theme choices
4) political doublespeak from staff
5) disregard/contempt of criticism, including vent crew white kniting
6) presence of gamemasters/oc gamemasters and/or their existence as facheads
7) going public this early
8) nepotism
9) few vl players on staff
10) sinistar

Some of these are naturally unfair, but they do exist.

This list has and continues to baffle me. It's also contradictory, but I suspect that's your point.

Well different people have different issues.

To clarify, since you are easily confused, these aren't all my isssues. I do not, for instance, have issue with sinistar. They are all issues I have seen, and are also issues that are worth saying and have some merit. I don't think these issues contradict one another particularly strongly. The folks that dislike sinistar don't dislike him because he was a player after all.

Yeah, I think he's summing up about 200+ combined comments and LJ posts of gripes (and there's probably some not on my friendslist, I admit to not caring enough to dig around like I would for my own game). There's disagreements and differences on the problems, but those were common ones.

And pages and aim conversations.

I did forget to include the whole playerbase shift to themefocused games. Even the multitheme upcoming games are very particular to what can be apped relative to VL

Yeah, I didn't think of that either, but it's definitely true. I know I like tighter, more bound themes than the old multithemes. They don't do much for me.

And the video games I'd want to play a feature character from are SRT:OG, Tales series, and Wild ARMs. And...there's games in the works that'd support all of those and do their themes better than having to jackhammer them into VL.

EDIT: Oops. Obviously, SRT is where I get my SRT:OG fix.

Aigis on vl is just another robot (tho the teeg and tio scenes were hilarious), on Pmush she can actually reflect on it as a strange thing

Beatrice on vl is just another girl with a god complex, on gaslamp--presuming she is appable--she is a threat

And so on

Beatrice is...problematic, in app ability terms. We'll see.

I know, hench 'presuming'

I don't think she's undoable but it may require drunken bouts of creatived thought.

I can however say with confidence that she is a lot more than a girl with a god complex. And also a lot less.

But in good new, we are using human Janus.

I believe this is in fact an authentic issue in the specialness economy model, though I doubt it's a 'VL issue' so much as a 'multitheme issue'.

Well vast multithemes, of which vl/gate/mvc are the ones on this circuit. A multitheme like m3 doesn't really have this issue

Yeah, the cool thing about multitheme games is... you can app pretty much anybody.

The bad thing is, you can app pretty much anybody. This saps specialness (to use Leo's term) out of individual characters.
