Adios Summer 2008

Adios Summer 2008
With Summer 2008 slowly winding down, it's that time to recollect on the time that was.

Despite what drama I may have incurred during the spring, the summer was very enjoyable, one of the best even. Granted it didn't have that touch of romance the way last summer did, but I found that a non issue when I lived in the moment instead of focusing on things I couldn't fix. So I focused on those things I could, my happiness, my health, and my money situation.

My happiness was improved thanks in part to everyones mutual inclination to want to do something this summer, whether it be a movie, a trip, or wanting to get out and drink. Everyone needed to get out, and socialize, school or an incoming baby will do that to you. Whether it was hanging out at a friends house drinking absinthe or a Lord of the Rings themed bar, it was nice hanging out with everyone.

It wasn't just the same people all time either. I had my Franny and Ham weighlifting and grappling group, my Eric, Lisa, and Richard First Friday group, the Louie, Mick and Brotherhood group, Team Comic-Con/ Secret Crisis, Sprint group, Old A-Link crew, Unhappy Virgin, etc. I got to hang out with alot of friends I don't have time to hang out with during the school year, or who were simply acquaintances.

Okay enough with the speeches here's a list of things I liked about summer 2008.

- Routines with friends. Lunch with Hamric and Franny after working out, First Friday with Eric, Lisa, and Richard, Sunday guitar lessons with Nick and Unhappy Virgin, Jiu Jitsu with Ham and Fran, Thursday racketball with my dad and sister, Once a month breakfast with my sister, midnight movie showings with Franny, Aldana, Ham, and Nick, and a once a year Comic-Con trip with the Comic-Con crew.

Which I suspect will be much bigger next year.

- A good year for summer films and more specifically comic films, here's my top 8 of summer 08

1. The Dark Knight

2. Iron Man (1 and 2 are much closer than you think)

3. Incredible Hulk (a wise reboot)

4. Tropic Thunder

5. Wanted

6. Pineapple Express (down one notch because the second experience didn't hold up as well)

7. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

8. Get Smart (only because I haven't seen Step Brothers yet)

- Jiu Jitsu: Therapy for my soul

- Vacationing: The more expensive therapy

- First experiences which include. Drinking Absinthe, drinking everclear, writing a complete comic script, playing an instrument (or at least try to), going one month without fast food, take a one day trip to Santa Monica (A fourteen hour firecracker of fun.).

- Turning acquaintances into close friends Louie, Lisa, Richard, Ray, Mick, Johnny, Jeff, and Eric (Garcia) were all people I knew, was cool with, but never really got to "know", but when my close friends weren't there, or just busy doing something else, all these people stepped to the plate and knocked it out of the park, I had some of the best experiences with these people who went from acquaintance or occasional friend, to close friend in a matter of three months, and no, none of my already close friends fell off (well except one of course), I simply added a few more.

- Swimming: Didn't do it as much as I'd like, but enough to want to implement it in my regular workout.

- Running: I could lift weights for three hours (like I normally do, but I never feel like I workout hard unless I get on a track and run).

- A more personal experience at Comic-Con, last year I felt like a specator, this year, I was a maker of my own destiny.

- $5 Subway subs. Thanks to you I was not also just able to save money and eat right, but the extra bucks you saved me enabled me to spend money on more important things, like alcohol and comics.

- Robert Downey Jr. (You are Phoenix who died and from the ashes rebirthed)

- Heath Ledger (r.i.p. you son of a bitch, you left the party too early)

- In my opinion one of the all time best comic writers, Grant Morrison, talking comics and giving breaking in advice to me.

Best quotes of summer 2008 (Sorry if I misinterpret them)

Women are a perpetual disappointment -Louie and the state of relationships

That's good we need new talent, alot of it is shite - Grant Morrison when I told him I want to break into the business

I asked the women there if they found being good at video games is hot -Mick about his survey

I got Downey Syndrom -Richard referring to the Downey (Robert Downey Jr.)

I ruin men's lives, it's a proven fact -Lisa and her heartbreaking ways.

I'm not going to lie, i'm pretty fucked up -Francis after a few drinks of Everclear and Tequila, you wouldn't have been able to tell by looking at him.

I'd give my left nut to get my ass kicked by Zoe Bell -Richard talking about his encounter with Zoe Bell at Comic-Con

Danny Glover Dick Blood -Judd Apatow

Shut your mouth before I fuck it -Justin Long

None of my work was being picked up and I was down, I call my friend Harlan Ellison for advice, and he told me "Joe the reason your work is being rejected, is because you're writing crap... STOP WRITING CRAP!" -J Micheal Straczynski on advice about writing.

You cheating bastard! -Paul Jenkins when I cut a line to get his autograph, he signed it.

We should go back to the hotel room now -Joe after we managed a $188 bar tab forty minutes into getting to the bar.

It's all romantic, then it gets really sour, really fast -Hamric on the futility of relationships

He's no Johnny Depp - Joe talking about Tom Cruise's dreaminess to that of Johnny Depp's. Don't ask.

Nympho Zombie Apocalypse - Eric and Louie

This summer, they're cumming -Eric Tillman

Yeah... she went crazy -Hamric to Perla

I had a lot more but I accidentally clicked the page back button and erased everything so I had to rewrite this, so I shortened it slightly.

Well that's all I got for now, it's about that time to get to work, I got some stuff I need to get done. Maybe I'll add some more, maybe not. But I would like to hear what you guys think, and what were your views abou the past summer.

Until next time!

Let him who would enjoy a good future waste none of his present.
