The ComicBook-Con wind down

Sitting in the San Diego airport with Richard waiting for the plane to arrive. Comic-Con 2009 is at an end, and in many ways to my year. I always look at years beginning and ending after Comic-Con more than I do December, because it's the only thing I look forward to on a yearly basis.

In all honesty I found this Con bitter sweet for two reason. 1. Very important. I got sick day three of the con. It took so much out of me even though I attended all the panels I really wanted to make it to, I skipped out on the ones I didn't. Then all my postCon/ or Evening Con plans consisted of me getting something to eat downtown, and then wanting to go to the motel and sleeping, just to have enough energy to make it through the next day. One thing we had a smidge of last year that was completely absent from this con was a night life. No real boozing, no late night Comic-Con movie screenings, and no $200 bar tabs (although that's probably a good thing).

The other is with last year's ultrasuccessful con we had hope for participants. Initially we got a handful of verbal attendee's but like last year that whittled away. We then thought we had a light, but still bigger group of five that, upon further review was actually four, and then at the eleventh hour turned back into the trinity it was the year before. Complete failure on that end.

However this year still came with some great moments. As I forementioned. I attended (while not as many as last year), all the panels I really wanted, got all the books I really wanted (and some I didn't know I wanted until I saw them), and actually we were better organized than the year before. Last year we missed panels, and were often not sure where to go if we did. This year we were strangely effiecient about getting where we need to be. We ate and some very nice restaurants that will be good to know for years following, our hotel was better than lasts.

The list of things that went right far outweight the things that went wrong this year. It's just some of the joy was lost not getting the complete experience we're used to getting out of the con. In this I'm complete speaking for myself.

Every year attending is always a learning experience. I always add more or learn something to approve upon, or something to discard. Next year I want a hotel right next to the con and with enough beds for me to sleep on a mattress every night. I guess, I'm getting a little burgoise in my old age, but I thing part of the reason I got conventon cold was because of the lack of good sleeping, also, I would like to have the hotel close to the convention and the restaurants, much easier to drop off all the shwag we accumulate through out the day without being worn out from the trip back and fourth.

After three years of experiences, compromises, and now one that includes convention cold and me carrying two bags full of graphic novels around San Diego. I'm finally getting a good grasp on how to have a vacation...

And all you coming with us next year get to benefit from our experience. :)
