Bugger, bugger, bugger

ANOTHER one of those crafty weeks where nothing goes right. Course, these are things that I've never tried before, but still.

As for my adaptation of a Fair Isle knitted sock pattern to a smaller, shorter, fingerless glove (done instead in duplicate stitch), well. The sheer quantity words in that sentence are a dead giveaway that it couldn't possibly have worked. It looked pretty, but was completely illegible. It is highly important to me that everyone knows I'm a Hufflepuff, and this mitt reads "Huasldkjdue". And I ran out of rows. I took a picture before I ripped out all those stitches.

So, a fresh start with a blank yellow mitt. I'm using a simple uncial typeface this time. Not as pretty, but House Spirit will be better served.

And then. I am cantankerously stubborn. Once I start a project, it takes a mild-to-moderate disaster to get me to give up on it. Until then, I keep making excuses for my failing materials/methods, all the while trying to find workarounds. There's only so much you can work around. I am in the midst of a costuming project that includes a plaid corset-style bustier. Plaid, you say? Not for long. I'm raiding my stash tonight to find a replacement for that sorry-arsed excuse for fabric. It's a home-dec remnant that I got from who-knows-where and I was TRYING to make it work because I love the colour scheme and it coordinates so perfectly with the cool lining I have. However, after washing, it drew up and puckered. No prob, I thought. I'll press the heck out of it. I did, and the lengthwise AND crosswise grainlines were still a wobbly mess. See?

Stubborn as I am, I still tried to make it work, wasting a yard of interfacing and hours of plaid-matching before I realised that I should cut my losses and start anew.

At least I got lots of practise matching plaids, and doing so somewhat successfully, despite the undulating crap. I was guided to a great tutorial and handy tips by Diane on the Steampunkalong community. Now into the scrap pile it goes.

An update. A happy one. Now typing two hours later, after my stash raid. Joy of joys, I found a mill end of wool that I had forgotten about, and it coordinates with my cool lining. And wool is my fave fibre to work with, ever. The feel, the smell, the sound it makes when you're cutting through it, who it comes from (awwwwww.....). Anyhoo, here's my replacement fabric and I am happy.

Maybe I'll have something to show for this week's TTMT?
