But you have fantastic fabric warehouses where you live. You will need to find these. If you dont have one, you need to build a stash of stuff you find at rock bottom prices.
I have tried both locations of Vogue Fabrics, and The Textile Discount Outlet, which was nothing less than terrifying. Well, not that bad, but no real value considering the ceiling-high shelves of rolled fabrics you have to dig through and the 3 rickety wood floors/staircases and the COMPLETELY terrifying basement. And I know that there is another warehouse that's wholesale-only except one day a year when they open to the public. I get reminders from my local costumer's guild, but I haven't tried that one yet.
I really shouldn't build my stash anymore (made a promise to myself to actually use some of it first), and if I do venture back into Hancock's, I might cry. QQ
It would be fun, if you had a whole day and no kids. I can't remember if I could even find the remnants, but I do know they had leather-by-the-piece, which was pretty cool.
I am SO spoiled. This shop is within WALKING distance! That's why I'm so sad, I guess...if I ran out of thread or needed a zipper, I could just stroll to get more. No longer.
I wouldn't mind driving to get to the good warehouses, but I've always got little ones toddling behind me, and having a close-by fabric shop was outstanding.
(I am surprised, however, that my husband did not do a dance of joy when I told him the news.) :D
You should see the mas familias that roam the fabric warehouses.... kids are not an issue. But they may get bored. This is when you dump the kids on hubby one day and do your yearly fabric shopping on warehosue clearance day.
As Sabrebabe, I will rip apart dead clothing and luggage and repurpose zippers and buttons.
Oh man that stinks... I guess you can use the internet to order stuff. You can always try a site like mypoints.com (if you sign up stick my email address in as a referral) but you earn points for your purchases that you make through there, and you can use the points towards gcs. They also provide you with lots of coupon codes for free shipping etc.
STOP!!! You guys are no good for my craft budget!! :D
I'm going to check out mypoints...I'd rather have stuff shipped to me than pay the gas money to get to the other good fabric stores around me. Thank you for the tip!
Oh, I'm not a formal guild member by any means. I'm just on their email list. Never been to a meeting (kids again), but before I signed up for their newsletter, I had no idea the scope and multitude of cons that existed. LJ is my craft guild. :)
As sabrebabe and droxy have gently reminded me, however, I am very fortunate to live in a city with lots of big fabric warehouses. :)
The thing is, I never really bought fabric at Hancock's - except quilting cotton - I just loved having notions nearby. And I LOVE me a Hancock's pattern sale!

If you have fabric warehouses in your neck of the woods, *I*'d drive 4 hours to get to them! Nearest ones to me are either Chicago or Minneapolis.

Yes, we are bad. But you belong to a costuming guild. I don't. =( I just make stuff. You are more into an organization.
