Eep, time to play catch up!
Day 14 - What is the hardest thing about living in Japan versus your home country?
The utter lack of good television really hurts, actually. I didn't think I would miss it but I really, really do miss watching TV. I have a theory that because the men are primarily the breadwinners in Japan, and because they often stay out until very late, prime time TV is catered towards the female audience rather than a homogeneous audience. Therefore a lot of the stuff you see on TV in Japan is going to be geared towards them. That means a lot of talk shows, shows about cooking and whatnot. I would love to hear someone refute this!
Also, the lack of reasonably priced fruit is a big thing. Having to pay up to $2 for a single apple at times is utterly insane and really wrecks my eating habits. I believe bananas are at the same price level as those in Canada but every other fruit is way crazier. Oh, how I long for the days of watching TV while eating apples or grapes!
Oh yes, and Tim Horton's coffee.
Oh, and one more thing. The lack of racial diversity really, REALLY fucks with my mind.
Day 15 - Weirdest food item you've seen, and weirdest food item you've actually eaten.
Hm, the weirdest thing I've actually eaten would be natto, fermented soybeans, but that wasn't too bad. I'm not a huge fan of it but I wouldn't turn it down if I had to eat it. As for the weirdest food I've seen, it would probably have to be
live sushi. That was freaaaaaaky.
Day 16 - How you realised you'd acclimated to Japan. (if you have)
I don't think I've experienced this yet, because I didn't feel much of a culture shock when I moved to Tokyo initially. I landed and other than the language problem, I kind of accepted that things were different in Japan and that was that. I don't remember freaking about any weird customs or cultural norms that I didn't know about. It was more like a "Uh, well, okay" kind of response than anything else.
